Warrior Softball Dominates Eastern Oregon in Doubleheader Sweep

LA GRANDE, Ore. - The Corban University softball team put on an impressive offensive display against Eastern Oregon University on Saturday afternoon, as the Warriors completed the doubleheader sweep over the Mountaineers with ease. The Navy and Gold claimed both contests in five innings, as it drove in 20 runs and recorded a total of 25 hits in the two games combined.

"The girls really came dialed in right from the start today," said head coach Nathan Ohta. "We put together a couple impressive ball games to finish off a very good road trip. It was a great team effort, and another great day to be a Warrior!"

Game one of the twinbill saw the Warriors explode for 13 hits and 10 runs en route to a five-inning triumph, 10-1. The two Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) foes were neck-and-neck until the third frame, as the Navy and Gold tallied four quick runs to escape the Mountaineers.

The Warriors were led offensively by sophomore second baseman Anne Binschus (Gig Harbor, Wash.), as she went 3-for-4 with three RBI, including two doubles for the second game in a row. Sophomore center-fielder Annie Owen (Corvallis, Ore.) also notched three hits in four at-bats with a pair of RBI, while both senior third baseman Kyrianna Sorensen (Salem, Ore.) and senior right-fielder RaeAnna Dorcas (Everett, Wash.) went 2-for-3 on the dish.

Junior pitcher Emily Buhrkuhl (Stockton, Calif.) bounced back from a loss yesterday to College of Idaho with a dominant performance in the circle, as she registered five strikeouts and surrendered only five hits in the winning effort.

With the game tied at one apiece in the third frame, Corban's bats got hot, as the Warriors mustered two doubles and a pair of singles in the inning. Sophomore first baseman Kylie Durre (Bend, Ore.) doubled to center field to bring home Binschus and grant the Navy and Gold a 2-1 lead, and then with two runners in scoring position, junior designated player Jamie Costa (Tracy, Calif.) launched a two RBI single to give Corban a 4-1 advantage. Moments later, Owen mustered an RBI double to bring home Rush and cap the Warriors' four-run inning.

After a scoreless inning, Corban returned to its stifling ways in the fifth frame, as the Warriors tallied five more runs to put the game out of reach. With runners on second and third, Owen singled through the left side to drive home Rush. With the bases loaded, Binschus smashed a three RBI double down the right-field line to give Corban a 9-1 lead. The Navy and Gold continued its aggressiveness at the plate, as Sorensen singled to left to drive home Binschus to claim a 10-1 advantage.

With one last chance to extend the game in the bottom of the fifth, the Mountaineers' bats were silenced, as Buhrkuhl's arm forced two pop outs and a ground out to win the game for the Navy and Gold.

In game two of the doubleheader affair, Corban used eight runs in the opening two frames to put Eastern Oregon on its heels, as the Warriors managed to take care of the Mountaineers in five innings for the second-consecutive game, 10-2.

Sorensen continued her torrid offensive effort, as she batted 3-for-3 with a trio of RBI, including a two-run homer in the fourth inning. Corban also saw a home run by junior designated player McCayla Hoffman (Bothell, Wash.), as she launched a three-run bomb in the second to put Eastern Oregon in the dust.

Both Binschus and Owen tallied two hits on the afternoon for the Navy and Gold, while Durre batted 1-for-3 with two RBI. Corban shared the wealth offensively, as Dorcas, freshman first baseman Jaslyn Rush (Stockton, Calif.), and freshman pinch hitter Maddy Melton (Salem, Ore.) also collected a hit in the victory.

In the circle, junior hurler Danielle Horne (Vacaville, Calif.) collected her fourth victory of the 2015 campaign, as she recorded five strikeouts and yielded six hits for Corban.

Sorensen drove home Corban's first run in the opening frame thanks to a single down the right-field line to bring home Owen. With two runners in scoring position, Durre smacked a two RBI double to give the Warriors a 3-0 advantage. Durre eventually advanced home, as Rush singled through the left side to round off the Navy and Gold's four-run frame.

Corban's bats remained hot in the second inning, as the Warriors compiled four more runs to break the game open. After Binschus scored on an error, Hoffman launched a three-run homer to left center to double (8-0) the Navy and Gold's lead and bury Eastern Oregon's hope for a rally.

With an 8-1 advantage in the fourth, Sorensen registered her fourth home run of the season, as she sent the ball to center field for a two-run bomb to extend the Warriors' lead to nine (10-1).

Although the Mountaineers tallied another run in the fifth with two outs, Horne struck out Eastern Oregon's last at-bat to retire the side and grant Corban its first CCC twinbill sweep of the 2015 campaign.

Corban improved to 19-5 and 3-1 in CCC play, while Eastern Oregon dropped to 10-9 and 1-3 in CCC action

The Navy and Gold will look to continue its winning ways on March 17 in its CCC home-opener against Northwest Christian University. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
