Warrior Baseball Nabs Game-Two Victory in Day-One Split with Menlo

ATHERTON, Calif. - The Corban University baseball team won game two on Friday against Menlo College, 15-0, leading the Warriors to split results on the day after dropping game one on the road, 8-5. With the split results, it marks the third-straight set of NAIA-West games that Corban has responded from a game-one loss with a game-two win.

In the game-two triumph, the Warrior bats were firing on all cylinders throughout the contest, but it was freshman pitcher Caleb Henry (Salem, Ore.) who ultimately stole the show, hurling eight-shutout innings, allowing just four hits while striking out two along the way. The performance earned him his team-leading fourth win of his rookie campaign.

"The guys responded very well to maybe the toughest loss of the season with their best team effort of the year in game two," said head coach Jeff McKay. "Caleb Henry's eight shutout innings were special. The freshman's effort was his second in a row on the road against conference competition. It really set the tone for the offense to have its best game of the season, and the team sparkled on defense too."

With Henry dominating on the mound, the Warrior bats really woke up and sprayed the ball all around the ballpark. After jumping on top in the third frame with four runs, Corban added four more over the next several innings to build a comfortable eight-run advantage into the ninth.

Then in a massive final frame, the Navy and Gold exploded for seven runs, stretching its lead to 15-0, marking the largest shutout win of the 2015 season.

At the dish, a number of players excelled, with a trio of Warriors racking up three hits apiece. Sophomore shortstop Ryan Rosas (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) finished the game 3-for-5 with three runs scored and one RBI, while senior second baseman Stockton Taylor (Brewster, Wash.) went 3-for-5 as well, scoring two runs and recording two RBI. Junior right-fielder Hayden Calvert (Canberra, Australia) also registered three hits in the win, while junior designated-hitter Nic Coffman (Portland, Ore.) ripped one hit and notched three RBI in the triumph.

"This team is developing a trait of being resilient," said McKay. "That is a good asset for the conference race. Stockton Taylor has really developed well with the bat this year. We as a team are really beginning to find our stride offensively. We also hope to get Marc Gallegos back next weekend from his concussion. Two more games tomorrow on the road against a likely conference top-spot contender. We need to be ready. We should be ready to put together a good run in conference."

Prior to that game-two victory, the Warriors battled with the Oaks in game one that went back-and-forth throughout the contest. Corban took the early lead in the second via sophomore third baseman Vince Gonzalez (Kennewick, Wash.) when he ripped an RBI single to left field, scoring Calvert.

Menlo responded with a run in the third and then four more in the fifth, controlling the game into the eighth frame. That is when the Warriors struck back, however, and just like in games last weekend, Coffman provided the power at the plate, launching a two-run shot over the right-field wall, bringing Corban to within two. Later in the inning, the Warriors eventually tied the game at 5-5 via senior Scott Dreier's (Santa Cruz, Calif.) RBI single.

Unfortunately for the Navy and Gold, Menlo got its first two batters on base in the ninth, and then its third batter homered to center field, ending the contest on the spot.

Warrior junior pitcher Tony Davidson (Coeur d'Alene) put together a good performance in the game, throwing seven innings and giving up five runs while striking out six.

Corban (14-14, 3-3) returns to the diamond tomorrow to finish the four-game series with the Oaks (21-9, 3-3). First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
