Second-Half Goal Dooms Corban Women’s Soccer in 1-0 Defeat to Raiders

SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University women's soccer team lost a 1-0 contest to Southern Oregon University on Friday afternoon at Warrior Field, dropping the Warriors to 1-2 in Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) action on the year. For the Raiders, it was their first win in CCC play, and also a big win after having their season ended by Corban in the CCC Tournament via a penalty-kick shootout last year.

"Today was a well-fought game by both teams," said head coach Marty Ziesemer. "Southern and Corban have battled out close games the last several years. This one was no different. We had our chances to score and were unlucky. I am proud of the team's hard work and persistence. We are doing many things right, but we also need to create some things so the breaks go in our favor."

In what was a fairly even first stanza, neither team created too many good opportunities, but SOU did get behind the defense on one occasion, registering a one-on-one shot against Warrior sophomore goalkeeper Sheyenne Brusven (Silverton, Ore.), but Brusven stood tall, making a nice point-blank save to keep the score level going into the break.

In the second half, the Raiders started on the front foot, scoring in the 49th minute when Presley Lambert received a through ball from teammate Sarah Garoutte, and Lambert took a touch and buried her left-footed shot off the right post and in, giving Southern Oregon the lead.

It would be a lead that the Warriors could not come back from, despite a free kick off the crossbar from senior midfielder Ashley Beykovsky (Gladstone, Ore.) later on in the match.

SOU held the shot advantage, 11-9, while Corban edged the Raiders in corner-kicks, 2-1. Brusven made four saves for Corban in goal, while Kylie Moltzen tallied four saves for the Raiders in the win.

Corban (3-6, 1-2 CCC) returns to action tomorrow when it hosts Oregon Tech at Warrior Field at 1 p.m. SOU (2-6-2, 1-2 CCC) takes on Northwest Christian in Eugene tomorrow at 4:30 p.m.
