Brusven's Heroics in Goal Not Enough as Corban WSOC Falls to UC Merced, 1-0

MERCED, Calif. - Corban University sophomore goalkeeper Sheyenne Brusven (Silverton, Ore.) did just about everything she could on Sunday in California to lift the Warrior women's soccer team to a win, but Corban came up just short against UC Merced in a 1-0 loss. Brusven racked up a career-best 14 saves on the day for the Warriors, but the attack did not get going until late on in the match, and ultimately proved to be too late as the Warriors return home to Oregon without a goal scored on the road.

"This was a disappointing loss in that we had our chances," said head coach Marty Ziesemer. "It was a very back and forth match. Road trips like this are for challenging us to get better. We will regroup and get back to work."

Ashley Bennett put UC Merced in front in the 19th minute of play when she scored off an assist by Niccole Salm. That would be the only score of the first half, as Corban couldn't get the wheels moving offensively.

In the first half as a whole, the Bobcats (3-0-1) dictated the play on the field, registering 12 shots to just one for the Warriors. If not for Brusven's seven saves during the first 45 minutes, Corban would have found itself down by much more.

In the second stanza, Corban woke up and started to create some more chances offensively. The Warriors came close on a couple of occasions, but ultimately nothing came to fruition for the Corban attack, resulting in being shutout for the second-consecutive contest in California.

While Corban's attack was better in that second half, Brusven remained active in goal defensively, registering seven more saves to total 14 on the day. The Bobcats notched a 22-7 shot advantage on the afternoon, while for Corban, seven different players recorded one shot. One positive for Corban to draw from that stat was that of the seven shots, six went on frame.

Corban (2-3) returns to Warrior Field to host Linfield College on Thursday. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
