CALDWELL, Idaho – The Corban University women's basketball team used fantastic three-point shooting and big performances from veteran players en route to a 77-71 victory over the College of Idaho Coyotes on Friday night on the road. For Corban, the win gives the Warriors the season sweep over the Yotes.
"It took a quarter, but then we found the range and Sadie and Jade kept it hot the rest of the way," said Corban head coach Dave Bale. "We did a nice job on the boards and limited them to six offensive rebounds. It is a really tough place to play, so we felt really good with our effort and the outcome."
For Corban, the win was not only the second of the year over the Yotes, but it was the second-straight six-point victory over C of I. Corban continues to ride its hot streak, winning six out of the last seven overall on the 2015-16 campaign.
Big performances from senior guard Jade Lowery (Oregon City, Ore.) and junior forward Sadie Pilgeram (Helena, Mont.) led Corban to the triumph. Lowery went 10-for-21 from the field with 27 points to go along with 10 boards, while Pilgeram almost recorded another double-double, this time racking up 24 points on a very efficient 9-for-12 shooting effort with nine rebounds. The two players combined to make all 10 of Corban's three-pointers on the night, and Pilgeram seemed as if she couldn't miss, going 6-for-8 from downtown.
Corban did not start the game well, trailing after quarter one, 22-13. A big second quarter, however, in which the Warriors outscored the Yotes 26-9, saw Corban nab the lead heading into the halftime intermission. In the third and fourth quarters, Corban maintained a steady advantage, and while C of I made it a four-point game late, the Warriors made enough free throws down stretch to secure their sixth CCC victory of the year.
Corban dominated on the boards, 43-30, including grabbing 14 offensive rebounds on the night, resulting in 15 second-chance points. Corban shot 45.8% overall for the game and 38.5% from beyond the arc en route to the win. On top of Lowery and Pilgeram's performances, junior guard Annie Owen (Corvallis, Ore.) and senior guard Julia Young (Snohomish, Wash.) both chipped in eight points.
Defensively, Corban held C of I to 45.8% shooting while only 32.1% from downtown. Petra Lumpert totaled a team-best 27 points for the Yotes in the loss.
Corban (11-9, 6-5 CCC) returns to action tomorrow evening when it travels to La Grande, Ore. for another CCC contest against Eastern Oregon University. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
