Corban Men’s Basketball Foils Wolves in 74-60 Victory

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Corban University men's basketball team played shutdown defense throughout Friday's Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) contest on the road against Walla Walla University en route to a 74-60 triumph. The win gives the Warriors the season sweep over the CCC newcomer.

"I thought we played very well at the defensive end holding them to 37% shooting from the field," said Corban head coach Steve Masten. "We were able to get a lot of transition baskets which helped make up for our poor three-point shooting."

The win for the Warriors snaps a four-game losing streak in CCC play.

For the game, the Navy and Gold shot 51.8% from the field, utilizing a 36-16 points in the paint advantage. The Warriors also held the advantage on the boards, grabbing 44 as compared to just 29 for the Wolves. For Walla Walla, however, it received a big effort from its bench, as the Wolves outscored Corban's bench 18-5.

Leading the way for Corban offensively was sophomore guard AJ Monterossi (Beaverton, Ore.) with 22 points on an 8-for-15 shooting effort. He also dished out seven assists, grabbed three rebounds while totaling two steals in 36 minutes of action. Supplementing Monterossi's big day was senior forward Cyrus Ward (Gig Harbor, Wash.). Ward registered a double-double on a 10-of-12 shooting mark with 21 points and 11 boards.

Also providing a big inside presence on the day for the Warriors was freshman forward Joel Johnson (Tigard, Ore.), as he nabbed 12 rebounds and was perfect from the floor for six points on 3-of-3 shooting. Additionally, junior guard Caleb Herzberg (Beaverton, Ore.) drained two shots from deep, totaling 11 points on the afternoon.

For the Wolves, it was Chad Torkelsen and Ethan Osias who led the way with 11 points, while Michael Isotalo notched 10 points. Walla Walla shot just 37.5% overall for the game.

Corban (12-10, 6-8 CCC) takes a break from action until next Friday and Saturday when it hosts Northwest University and The Evergreen State College. Tipoff on both nights is set for 7:30 p.m.
