"I have to hand it to our ladies as tough as this game was, we won," said Corban head coach Dave Bale. "In the five-minute overtime we scored 17 points and had a couple of good defensive stands. We had good looks and it seemed like we missed a lot of shots, but we actually ended up shooting 43% for the game."
In what was a very even game throughout the entire first half, New Hope grabbed the slight edge heading into the locker rooms at 25-24, but the Warriors stormed out in the second stanza with a 16-point third quarter to take a three-point lead into the fourth quarter.
In that fourth stanza, New Hope hung tough and actually nabbed a three-point lead with 50 seconds remaining in regulation. The Warriors then went to their playmaker and leader, Lowery, and with just 23 seconds left on the clock, Lowery nailed a step-back three-pointer, tying the contest at 58-58. The Warriors then played great defense and forced overtime, but almost won it in regulation when Corban did have a last-second offensive play that almost worked to perfection.
In the overtime period, Lowery and junior forward Payton Wilcox (Salem, Ore.) closed out the game for the Warriors, making key buckets down the stretch en route to the six-point win.
"I give our ladies credit for hanging in there as New Hope shot really well from downtown to keep them in the game and we didn't stop competing," said Bale. "Sadie did a nice job on the boards as well as getting 13 points and Jade found the bottom of the net at a really good percentage and handled their pressure down the stretch. Payton finished strong with 11 points and seven boards as well."
Lowery went 13-for-23 from the field on the way to her 34 points to go with four assists and five boards. Junior forward Sadie Pilgeram (Helena, Mont.) registered yet another double-double, totaling 13 points with 13 rebounds and four assists. In addition, Wilcox added 11 big points with seven rebounds for Corban.
After the game, Lowery talked about the exciting win in a post-game interview:
For New Hope (6-6), Jessica Logan notched a team-best 26 points, while Ellie Gould totaled 14 points for the Deacons. As a team, the Deacons shot 38.5% overall and 42.9% from deep.
Corban shot 43.8% from the field and 30.8% from beyond the arc as a team.
The Warriors (7-8) return to the court next weekend when they travel north to Washington for games against Evergreen and Northwest. Tipoffs on Friday and Saturday are set for 5:30 p.m.
