KIRKLAND, Wash. - Despite trailing by 14 points entering Saturday's fourth quarter against Northwest University on the road, the Corban University women's basketball team rallied and scored 33 points in the final stanza, completing the huge comeback in thrilling fashion to defeat the Eagles by three points, 80-77. For Corban, it was its largest fourth-quarter comeback in program history.
"It was looking like the same tune and dance, but the ladies changed the channel and played some timely defense, rebounded the ball well, and hit some big shots," said Corban head coach Dave Bale. "I am really proud of the way they hung in there and battled back!"
Heading into the fourth quarter down 61-47, the Warriors began firing on all cylinders, going on a quick 8-2 run to start the stanza, forcing the Eagles to call a timeout. Corban continued its run on Northwest, keeping the Eagles on their heels, and with 2:50 left in regulation, senior guard Julia Young (Snohomish, Wash.) drained a shot from deep, tying the contest at 68-68.
Less than a minute later, senior forward Sadie Pilgeram (Helena, Mont.) squared up a three-point shot, and she made no mistake, swishing home the long-range effort to give Corban its first lead of the contest at 71-68 with two minutes remaining.
Northwest responded well, however, converting on back-to-back possessions to take a 73-71 advantage, but then Warrior senior guard Jade Lowery (Oregon City, Ore.) hit a shot from beyond the arc, giving Corban a one-point lead with one minute left. Once again, the Eagles answered right back with a jumper to take a one-point lead, but that just set up the heroics from Lowery on the next possession for the Navy and Gold.
Lowery came up clutch and sank her second-straight three-pointer for Corban, putting the Warriors up by two points with 30 seconds to go, and Corban closed the game out from there with a solid defensive stop and clutch free throws, resulting in the three-point victory.
Lowery finished the night with 16 points, going 4-for-5 from downtown. She also grabbed nine boards and dished out three assists in the win. Young led the way for the Warriors with 19 points, nailing a trio of three-pointers while also going 10-for-11 from the charity stripe. In addition, Pilgeram totaled 15 points and 11 boards for another double-double, while junior forward Payton Wilcox (Salem, Ore.) finished the evening with 15 points for Corban and nine rebounds.
Corban (8-9, 3-5 CCC) returns home next week for a pair of games against Multnomah University and Warner Pacific College on Friday and Saturday night. Tipoff both nights is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
