Corban Men’s Basketball Gains Experience at NCAA DI Idaho

MOSCOW, Idaho – In its second and last exhibition contest of the 2016-17 campaign, the Corban University men's basketball team played a very competitive contest against NCAA Division I opponent, University of Idaho, falling 90-67 to the Vandals. As it was an exhibition game, the loss did not count against Corban's record.

"Our guys played with a high level of effort and unselfishness," said Corban head coach Austin Johnson. "It was fun to see us share the ball and battle with a very good NCAA Division 1 program for such long stretches. I was proud of our guys for clawing back after a poor start in the second half to make it a single digit game midway through the half. Ultimately, Idaho did a great job of capitalizing on our mistakes with their size and athleticism."

Corban played very well in the first half, and actually led for much of the stanza. By the halftime break, the Warriors only trailed the Vandals by seven points, 39-32. In the second stanza, Idaho caught fire offensively, scoring 51 points en route to winning by 23 on the evening.

Chris Martin led the way offensively for the Warriors, scoring 13 points while hitting a team-best three long-range efforts. Both AJ Monterossi and Caleb Dozier chipped in with eight points for the Navy and Gold, while Mike Seng also provided a lift off the bench, going 2-of-3 from the field with a pair of three-pointers and two free throws made for eight points.

"Our team took a step forward tonight with the level of trust and joy that they played with," said Johnson. "It is my hope we can sustain that throughout the year."

As a team, Corban shot 36.5% from the field while going 38.2% from downtown, nailing 13 long-range shots on the night. Idaho shot 49.2% from the field and 57.1% from beyond the arc.

Corban (2-2) returns home and plays in its 2016-17 home-opener on Friday, November 18. Tipoff against Simpson University (Calif.) is set for 7 p.m. in the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
