Corban Women’s Basketball Remains Undefeated with Win at Lewis & Clark

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Corban University women's basketball team ran the program's best-ever start to four-straight victories to open a season on Wednesday night, defeating Lewis & Clark College on the road, 60-56. For the Warriors, all of the wins have come on the road.

"We struggled in the second quarter, but we came back in the second half and did a lot better job of executing and being able to score," said Corban head coach Michelle Skyles. "Lewis & Clark did a great job and created some issues for us defensively and on the boards, but our players did an incredible job down the stretch doing things we needed to do to win."

The Warriors stormed out of the gates in the first quarter, taking a 14-6 lead into quarter number two. In that second stanza, however, the Pioneers bounced back and outscored Corban by 13 points en route to owning the 29-24 halftime advantage.

In the second half, a great all-around team effort on both ends of the court led to Corban winning the third-quarter battle by 10 points to regain a five-point advantage heading into the fourth and final quarter. Both teams battled down the stretch, but Corban came up with some big-time defensive stops when it needed to and made the necessary free throws, resulting in the four-point win.

"I am super proud of how we responded in the second half," said Skyles," and how we fought it out for the win."

The Navy and Gold was led by Payton Wilcox with 13 points on a 5-for-7 shooting effort. Maci Benedict chipped in 11 points and also snagged seven boards for the Warriors, while Hannah Shore went 4-for-7 from the floor for 12 total points and was the only other Warrior in double-figures. Maddey Pflaumer played strong down low, grabbing a team-best eight rebounds while scoring seven points for Corban.

As a team, Corban shot 42.0% from the field while holding Lewis & Clark to a 34.3% shooting mark.

Corban (4-0) returns to the court tomorrow night in its home-opener against Linfield College. Tipoff against the Wildcats is set for 7 p.m. in the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
