Warrior Women’s Basketball Loses Lead Late in Loss to Puget Sound

SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University women's basketball team took a seven-point lead into the fourth quarter against the University of Puget Sound on Wednesday, but the Loggers went on a 13-0 run to begin the fourth, ultimately leading to a 71-63 triumph for the road squad. For Corban, it marks the team's second-straight loss after winning its first five to start the year.

"We had times where we really battled tonight and showed great moments," said Corban head coach Michelle Skyles. "Puget Sound is a very well-coached team and they were outstanding on the offensive end tonight."

The Warriors struggled to get into any sort of offensive flow in the first half, but a good defensive effort had the Warriors down by just one point at the halftime break.

In the third quarter, both teams seemed to be scoring at will, nailing three-pointers and layups on either end of the floor. Down by one point, 44-43, with two minutes left in the third stanza, Corban went on a furious 10-2 run to close out the period and take what seemed to be a commanding lead and all of the momentum into the fourth. That run was highlighted by back-to-back long-range efforts from Mattaea Cooper and Hannah Shore in a matter of 10 seconds.

For as good as the third quarter was offensively, it was the opposite in the fourth quarter as the Warriors struggled to get anything going offensively and didn't score their first basket of the stanza until there were less than three minutes left in regulation. By that point, Puget Sound had already regained the lead, and the Loggers closed out the contest from there in the eight-point win.

"We had lapses where we couldn't score in the fourth quarter once the game started getting away from us and we couldn't set our press/defense," said Skyles. "What an incredible end to the third quarter with a lot of subs in. It was fun to watch. We have some time to get some good practice in finally and I'm excited to see how we respond going forward."

Payton Wilcox went 7-for-8 from the field for the Warriors for 16 points and five boards, while Sadie Pilgeram totaled 11 points with a trio of long-range efforts.

As a team, the Warriors shot 45.3% overall, but Puget Sound racked up 15 offensive rebounds, resulting in 12 second-chance points. Puget Sound shot 36.8% on the afternoon.

For the Loggers (4-0), Samone Jackson scored a team-best 26 points in the victory.

Corban (5-2) returns to action on December 2 when it hosts Simpson University. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
