No. 13 Corban Men’s Soccer Downs Eagles 2-0 in CCC Tournament Quarterfinals

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – Thanks to a full team effort on Friday evening, the No. 13-ranked Corban University men's soccer team defeated Northwest University in a Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Tournament Quarterfinal match, 2-0. The Warriors used the full complement of their bench, utilizing the strong depth that they have en route to a two-goal triumph over the Eagles.

"The team played a smart, composed match this evening," said Corban head men's soccer coach Aaron Lewis. "We'll look to reorganize ourselves tonight and prepare for another exciting opportunity tomorrow."

Corban has now ended Northwest's season in three-consecutive years in the CCC Tournament, dating back to 2014.

Corban looked as if it was going to go on front early when the Eagles committed a foul in their own penalty box, giving Corban a penalty kick. The chance was saved, however, keeping the score level at 0-0.

The Warriors bounced back from that missed opportunity, however, as in the 27th minute, junior forward Timur Zhividze slotted a ball to the back post and found senior midfielder Kemar Prince lurking, and Prince made no mistake, finishing the chance off to put Corban up 1-0. For Prince, it was his third goal in two games this year against the Eagles.

Then in the 39th minute of play, freshman defender Christian Silva played a ball down the left side and Zhividze one-timed his left-footed cross into the middle, and an unlikely hero showed up for the Navy and Gold. Junior forward Miguel Naves was in the perfect spot for the cross from Zhividze, and after having just entered the match, Naves found the back of the net from close range, putting Corban up 2-0.

Corban held the shots' advantage, 13-6 in the first half, and then in the second stanza, closed the match out defensively to earn the shutout victory. For Corban, it is its ninth shutout on the season. For the match, junior goalkeeper Jordan Farr made three key saves, including a big one late in the first half off of a beautiful free kick by Northwest.

Corban finished the match with a 19-11 shots edge, and a 6-2 corner-kicks advantage.

The Warriors (17-2) return to action tomorrow evening in a CCC Tournament semifinal match against Carroll College. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. in Springfield, Ore., at the Willamalane Complex. Carroll tied Southern Oregon 0-0 in the final game of Friday night's quarterfinal matchups, and then the Fighting Saints' advanced via a penalty-kick shootout victory over the Raiders.
