EUGENE, Ore. – The Corban University women's basketball team started Tuesday's night's Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) contest on fire, but the offense slowed down and ultimately (RV) Northwest Christian University overcame an early deficit to rally back and take down the Warriors, 78-71.
The game started out well for the Warriors, as within the first five minutes, both Sadie Pilgeram and Maddey Pflaumer had nailed long-range efforts for Corban to give the Navy and Gold the early advantage. Pilgeram would hit another shot from downtown later in the period, and then Maci Benedict drained one from deep to put the Warriors up 24-16 after the first 10 minutes.
NCU responded in the second quarter with 24 points of its own, and ultimately the score was tied at the halftime break, 40-40.
In the third stanza, Jeni Hoffert caught fire for the Beacons, hitting five long-range shots while putting the Beacons up by five points heading into the fourth quarter. In the final period, Corban tried to mount a comeback, but for every run the Warriors made, they were unable to get over the top, and NCU had the answer, ultimately finishing off the seven-point CCC win.
For the Warriors, Pflaumer led the way with 25 points on a 10-for-18 shooting effort, and she also grabbed six rebounds and dished out two assists in the defeat. Pilgeram finished the evening with 17 points while shooting 7-for-13 from the floor, nailing a team-best three shots from deep. In addition, Benedict finished the evening with 12 points for the Warriors while also totaling a team-high five assists.
"Our team played great the first half and battled hard," said Corban head coach Michelle Skyles. "In the third quarter, they caught fire, especially Hoffert. She averages 5.4 ppg and had six three-pointers tonight. We took better care of the ball tonight and rebounded well. We will continue to battle, and I believe in this team and am looking forward to better times ahead."
For the Beacons, Monique Thompson shot 8-for-13 from the floor for a team-best 21 points, while Hoffert finished the night with 18 points, scoring all of her points from beyond the arc.
Corban (6-7, 0-5 CCC) takes a break from action during the Christmas time period before returning to the hardwood on New Year's Eve when the Warriors travel to Walla Walla University for a 5:30 p.m. contest against the Wolves.
