Corban Men’s Basketball Season Finishes in 71-68 Defeat to SOU in CCC Quarters

ASHLAND, Ore. – A last-second three-pointer from Corban University sophomore guard Caleb Dozier (Beaverton, Ore.) was halfway down the cylinder and it looked to be sending the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Quarterfinal contest to overtime, but it barely managed to rim out, resulting in a 71-68 defeat for the Warrior men's basketball team against No. 14 Southern Oregon University.

For seventh-seeded Corban, the season finishes with a 16-13 overall record, while with the win, second-seeded SOU advances to the CCC Tournament semifinals vs. Warner Pacific College on Saturday night.

While Wednesday night's game will go down as senior forward Cyrus Ward's (Gig Harbor, Wash.) last-ever game donning the Navy and Gold, he left it all on the court, having a night to remember. He finished the contest with a game-high 33 points on 15-for-22 shooting while also grabbing 12 rebounds in the defeat.

Also putting forth a fantastic effort was sophomore guard AJ Monterossi (Beaverton, Ore.), as he finished the evening with 17 points and a team-best six assists before having to leave the game with an apparent injury.

In what was a close game from start to finish, the Warriors and Raiders battled throughout, trading buckets on either side. SOU led 36-32 at the halftime intermission, but Corban battled back and actually took one lead in the second stanza.

Down the stretch, however, the Raiders hit some big shots and maintained a two-possession lead, forcing Corban to foul. The Warriors benefited from SOU's 14-of-28 shooting performance from the charity stripe, and a missed free throw with 11 seconds remaining left the door open for one last chance to tie the game.

After freshman guard Preston White (Covington, Wash.) drove the lane and kicked to Dozier on the left side with the clock winding down, Dozier fired up what would have been the game-tying three-pointer, but the rim seemed to not want to let the ball go through it, ultimately seeing it rim out, resulting in the heartbreaking and season-ending three-point loss.

"We had a great effort tonight against the No. 14 team in the country on their floor and came up just short," said Corban head coach Steve Masten. "Caleb Dozier's three-pointer to tie the game went in and out at the buzzer. We didn't have a great shooting night which we needd to if we were going to sneak out a win."

Also playing well in his final game for Corban was senior forward Cody Crowe (Grants Pass, Ore.), as he totaled eight points and seven boards.

As a team, Corban shot 45.3% from the field while making just 15.4% of its shots from beyond the arc.

For SOU, Ben DeSaulnier finished the night with 15 points, while Jordan West totaled 14 points. As a team, the Raiders shot 50.0% from the floor.
