Corban Baseball comes up short against No. 2 Lewis-Clark State in Doubleheader

WILSONVILLE, Ore. – The Corban University baseball team came up short against No. 2-ranked Lewis-Clark State College (Idaho) on Friday afternoon at Wilsonville High School in an NAIA West Doubleheader, dropping game one, 6-0, and then game two, 11-8. With eight runs scored in game two for Corban, it ties the most runs the Warriors have ever scored against LCSC, dating back to a 1999 ballgame.

In the opener, Corban totaled just six hits while being shutout for the second-straight game against the defending NAIA national champions. For LCSC, Jake Barnett allowed just six hits while striking out seven batters in a complete game shutout. J.J. Robinson supplied many of the big hits for the visiting Warriors, going 3-for-5 at the dish with one RBI, while Cabe Reiten went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Additionally, Micah Brown went 4-for-4 for LCSC in the game-one win.

For Corban, it was a similar story to Thursday, as sophomore pitcher Caleb Henry (Salem, Ore.) threw well in each of the first four innings, but after giving up a solo home run in the fifth frame, Henry allowed three more runs in the sixth inning as he was chased from the game and the visiting Warriors led Corban, 4-0 after six innings. Two more runs in the seventh sealed the deal in game one for LC State.

At the plate, Corban first baseman Braden Wolgamott (Bellevue, Wash.) led the way with a 2-for-4 performance, while four other players tallied one hit in the game-one loss.

In game two of the day, LCSC jumped on top in the first frame via a three-run shot over the right-field wall from Robinson, taking the early advantage. By the seventh inning, it was 4-0, and Corban had still yet to record a hit, and LCSC had still not allowed a run in the series.

That changed in the seventh inning when Corban broke up the no-hit bid and racked up five hits and four runs to tie the ballgame at 4-4, bringing life back into the home side.

Unfortunately for Corban, LCSC flexed its muscles in the final two frames, scoring three runs in the eighth and four more in the ninth. Corban responded in both innings, as in the eighth, Wolgamott hit a two-run bomb over the left-field fence to make it a one-run game, and he came up and represented the tying run at the plate with two outs in the ninth, but he went down swinging to end the game, resulting in the three-run defeat.

"We battled well in game two, but we had just too many mistakes from our young players," said Corban head coach Jeff McKay. "They have been forced into more playing and pitching time with our injury situation. We were missing four key position players today, and LC State took advantage of our mistakes."

Wolgamott once again led the way at the plate with a 2-for-5 performance, two RBI and two runs scored.

Junior left fielder Benjamin Liogon (Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico) registered one hit and two runs scored for Corban, while a slew of other Corban batters also tallied a hit in the loss.

Sophomore pitcher Rilyn Lewchuk (Oregon City, Ore.) pitched well for the Navy and Gold, throwing seven innings while allowing four runs on six hits while also striking out six.

Robert Smith Jr. went 3-for-5 at the plate for LCSC to lead the way, tallying two RBI and two runs scored.

"They played like the No. 2 team in the country today, but we learned that we have the capability of being competitive with them," said McKay. "We will continue to learn and improve. We have always said we will be defined by how we finish, and not by how we start. We will get better and it will continue tomorrow. Go Warriors!"

Corban (10-16, 6-8 NAIA West) returns to the diamond tomorrow to close out the four-game series with No. 2 LCSC (24-2, 12-2 NAIA West) at 11 a.m. at Wilsonville High School. Live stats will be available online.
