CALDWELL, Idaho – The 23rd-ranked Corban University softball team jumped in front early in game one en route to the 7-4 triumph on Friday in Idaho, earning a split with the College of Idaho Yotes after a 12-4 game two defeat.
"It is always hard to get wins in Idaho, and Pesek, their No. 1 pitcher, has been throwing really well this year," said Corban head coach Nathan Ohta. "The girls came ready to play and roughed her up a bit today. It was a good to come out, beat their ace, and come away with the split."
In the opener, Corban jumped on top with two runs in the first inning, and it was junior shortstop Iris Rodriguez (Warden, Wash.) who stayed hot at the dish, registering an RBI single to left field, scoring junior center fielder Taylor Eilders (Cameron Park, Calif.) for the game's opening run. Corban made it 2-0 a batter later when sophomore first baseman Raina Reece (Salem, Ore.) doubled down the left-field line, scoring Rodriguez.
The Warriors doubled their advantage when senior McCayla Hoffman (Bothell, Wash.) blasted a two-RBI double to left-center in the second inning. Corban eventually extended the lead to 6-0 and then to 7-2, and while the Yotes made it a 7-4 ballgame in the sixth inning, Corban brought on junior pitcher Allie Mendez (Stockton, Calif.) in relief of senior pitcher Jessica Holsinger (Eagle, Idaho) to earn the save, and Mendez sat C of I down 1-2-3 in the seventh to give Corban the game-one victory.
Holsinger earned her ninth win of the campaign while allowing four runs on seven hits and striking out six. At the plate, Eilders went 1-for-4 with two runs scored, as did junior left fielder Ashleigh Lynch (Ronan, Mont.). Rodriguez went 3-for-4 with one RBI, while Reece went 2-for-4 at the dish with two RBI for the Warriors. In addition, both Mendez and junior second baseman Paige Martin (Portland, Ore.) tallied two hits in the win for Corban as the team totaled 13 hits to only seven for the Yotes.
Game two was a different story, as C of I scored three runs in the first inning and then put up an eight-spot in the third frame, chasing Mendez from the circle and forcing Corban to go to its bullpen.
Down 11-0, Mendez stepped up to the dish in the fourth inning and blasted a grand slam over the center field fence, giving Corban some life. The Yotes (10-9-1) tacked on one run in the bottom half of the inning, however, and the Warriors could not score in the fifth, resulting in the run-rule defeat, losing 12-4 in the five innings.
Corban (20-11) returns to action tomorrow when it takes on Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, Ore. First pitch of the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) doubleheader is set for 11 a.m.
