SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University baseball team dropped a non-conference contest on Tuesday afternoon on the road against cross-town foe Willamette University, 6-5. The Warriors will look to split the season series with the Bearcats next Wednesday when they host Willamette at Salem-Keizer Volcanoes Stadium.
While utilizing a number of different players in the non-conference contest, Corban jumped on top in the first inning on Tuesday when senior designated hitter Braden Wolgamott (Bellevue, Wash.) looped an RBI single to center field scoring junior Vince Gonzalez (Kennewick, Wash.) from third base.
In the second frame, freshman Kyler Elliott (Ennis, Mont.) singled to left field, scoring Warrior junior Kyle Kilian (Prosser, Wash.) on the play to put the Warriors up 2-0.
Willamette responded with three-straight runs to nab a 3-2 advantage, but then Elliot registered an RBI groundout in the fourth, scoring Kilian again to tie the game at 3-3.
The Bearcats bounced right back in the bottom half, scoring three runs in the fourth to retake the lead at 6-3, but Wolgamott kept Corban in the game in the seventh with a long two-run home run to left field, cutting the deficit to just one run.
That was as close as Corban would get, however, as the Warriors would not score again.
Wolgamott finished the afternoon with two hits and three RBI, while Kilian also went 2-for-3 at the dish with two runs scored. In addition, Gonzalez registered a pair of hits with two runs scored.
"What a beautiful day to play," said head coach Jeff McKay. "We were a little flat to start and it cost us. Midweek games are always tough to play. It was nice to see freshman outfielder Kyler Elliott get his first collegiate hit and drive in two runs."
Corban (11-17) returns to the diamond this weekend on the road when it faces off against the College of Idaho Yotes on the road. Live stats will be available online for the weekend NAIA West contests.
