Portland, Ore. – On a night that saw senior Caleb Herzberg join the Corban University men's basketball 1000-Point Club, the Warriors couldn't stop a hot-shooting Warner Pacific College team in a 96-85 loss on the road. For Corban, the loss snaps a four-game winning streak and sees the Warriors finish the first half of Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) play at 5-5.
"The guys fought again for 40 minutes, but Warner hit some tough shots and we had too many defensive breakdowns to win on the road," said Corban head coach Austin Johnson. "There were a lot of positives, and we got some great bench production, but we've got to get better to win on the road."
For the contest, Corban nailed 11 three-pointers, and it was Mike Seng who got Corban going early from downtown. After being subbed into the contest, he drained back-to-back long-range efforts, giving Corban the instant offense.
Herzberg then came back into the contest not long after and fired up long-range shots on back-to-back possessions, draining both shots to give him six points for the night at the time and see him join Corban's 1000-point club, becoming Corban's 30th player to ever accomplish the feat. Herzberg wasn't done in the first stanza either, nailing one more shot from downtown, pulling the Warriors even with the Knights at 43-43 at the halftime break.
In the second stanza, Warner Pacific quickly jumped in front, as after stealing the ball on Corban's first possession, the Knights nailed a three-pointer and never looked back, holding the lead for the remainder of the second half. Corban continued to cut into the lead time after time, but Warner Pacific had the answer for every run the Warriors made, making a number of clutch shots of their own in order to preserve the lead.
Leading the way for Warriors offensively in the defeat was Herzberg with 18 points on a 6-for-9 shooting effort with five three-pointers, while Joel Johnson went 6-for-10 from the floor for 14 points. In addition, Seng contributed 13 points to go with Chris Martin's 13 points. Moreover, Jeremiah Harris provided another solid effort with 11 points and seven rebounds.
As a team, Corban shot 42.5% for the game while Warner Pacific shot 48.4% overall and nailed 11 long-range shots to match Corban's output from deep.
For Warner Pacific, De'Co Sampson-Young scored a team-best 23 points, and Collin Malcolm tallied 17 points for the Knights in the win.
Corban (12-8, 5-5 CCC) returns home to Salem for its next four contests, with next week's games coming against College of Idaho and Eastern Oregon University. Tipoff on Friday against College of Idaho is set for 7:30 p.m.
