PORTLAND, Ore. – The No. 11-ranked Corban University men's soccer team was unable to hold its second half lead in a road match against the Warner Pacific College Knights, and ended up earning a draw in the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) matchup, 1-1.
The draw could prove to be costly, as if the Warriors had won, they would have moved into a tie for first place because of Rocky Mountain's tie earlier in the day. But the deadlock keeps Corban below the Battlin' Bears in the standings for the moment. In addition, Southern Oregon's victory jumped the Raiders into a tie for first-place with Rocky Mountain.
"Today's match was playoff intensity in many ways," said Corban head coach Aaron Lewis. "We have to pull from this experience to be better moving forward."
Corban struck early in the second half with a blistering free-kick goal from Timur Zhividze from 35 yards out, but Warner Pacific would equalize in the 76th minute with a header from Kingsley Armah off of a throw-in. The Warriors had a number of opportunities to reclaim the lead throughout the match, outshooting the Knights 14-6, but were unsuccessful in finding a final touch to reclaim the lead.
With the match still scoreless at the end of regulation, Corban and Warner Pacific headed to overtime, and with both sides refusing to budge, the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Timur Zhividze racked up five shots in total for the Warriors, with three being on goal, while Alex Segovia added a pair of shots for the Navy and Gold in the tie.
Defensively, the Warriors held strong in both overtime periods, highlighted by a crucial save by Jordan Farr to preserve the tie. Late in the second overtime, a penalty kick was called against Corban, forcing a must-save situation. Farr stepped up with one of the biggest saves of his career, sprawling out to keep the score even.
Corban (13-1-3, 9-1-2 CCC) will take to the road, as it heads to La Grande, Ore. for its final regular-season game against Eastern Oregon University. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m.
