Corban Men’s Basketball Upends NCAA Division II Concordia, 90-79

PORTLAND, Ore. – The (RV) Corban University men's basketball team led wire to wire on Tuesday night in Portland, upending NCAA Division II foe Concordia University, 90-79. While Concordia was playing the game as an official 'countable' contest, the Warriors played it as an exhibition.

"We relied on our seniors to set the tone and they did a great job tonight," said Corban head coach Austin Johnson. "Concordia is a great team and our guys matched every effort and run that they had. We were prepared."

Corban started strong and finished strong in the exhibition contest, handing the NCAA DII Cavaliers (4-1) their first loss of the year. The Warriors shot 43.7% overall on the evening and 31.6% from deep, but defensively, the Warriors held Concordia to just a 3-for-21 mark from downtown while forcing the Cavaliers into 13 turnovers. The Warriors had very good ball security on the other hand, only turning the ball over seven times.

AJ Monterossi totaled a team-best 21 points in the triumph, shooting 9-for-18 from the floor, while Chris Martin tallied 18 points, hitting a pair from deep while also going 10-for-15 from the charity stripe. The two Warrior guards combined for 12 assists between the two, with Monterossi leading the way with seven in the road win.

Also in double-digits were Joel Johnson and Jake Love, as Johnson totaled 13 points and Love 10. Additionally, Caleb Dozier scored seven points and hauled in a team-best nine boards.

"Once again, we got tremendous effort from our bench," said Johnson. "Denis and both Beau's were huge as we encountered foul trouble and minutes loaded up on some starters. We'll enjoy this and get right back to work to begin conference play. We need to keep building on this effort and energy. Proud of the guys."

Concordia was a former Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) foe before moving to play in the NCAA Division II following the 2014-15 season.

Corban (3-2) returns to action next Tuesday when it hosts Northwest Christian University. Tipoff is slated for a 7:30 p.m. start in the Warriors' first CCC contest of the 2017-18 campaign.
