SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The Corban University women's soccer team battled with Northwest University (Wash.) on Saturday night in the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) semifinals, but ultimately the Warriors came up short, losing 3-1. The loss eliminated Corban from the tournament and ended its season.
"Today's game was very tough because we struggled to execute our game in the first half, and it took us until the second half to get our momentum," said Corban head coach Likius Hafeni. "We scored first, but we struggled to get back into the game after we conceded the second goal. I am very proud of the way the girls played this season, and I am looking forward to next year."
Corban began the match very well, as Lexi McQueary received a through ball from Heidi Fronk, and McQueary finished it with class, burying her shot into the left side of the net to put the Warriors up in the sixth minute, 1-0.
Northwest responded right away, however, as the Eagles tied the match just a couple of minutes later with a goal of their own. The Eagles then made it 2-1 with a goal late in the first half to take the one-goal lead into the break.
The Warriors looked as if they might score on a couple of occasions during the second half, but Corban had its shots saved or blocked from point-blank range, keeping the score the same. Northwest eventually found the dagger when it scored again in the 83rd minute, finishing off the victory for the Eagles.
On the night, Northwest outshot Corban, 9-5.
The Warriors finish the campaign with a 10-7-2 overall record and the team's first trip to the CCC Tournament Semifinal match since 2014.
