BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Corban University women's basketball team played in an exhibition contest on Sunday afternoon up north against NCAA Division II foe, Western Washington University, and despite owning the lead after the first quarter, the Warriors fell, 86-57. The loss does not count against Corban's record as it was an exhibition.
"What a great first half we had today," said Corban head coach Michelle Skyles. "Our girls played so hard, confident and full of energy. Once we got down in the second half, we really hit a wall and weren't able to execute as well due to their adjustments. Western has a great team and they are one of the top D2 teams in the nation. I'm super proud of our team and what we learned from today."
Corban used solid team defense and efficient offense in the first stanza to nab a 21-16 lead heading into the second quarter. Western Washington exploded for 31 points in the second stanza, however, taking an eight-point lead into the locker rooms at the break.
In the second half, Corban's offense went cold, scoring just 12 points in the third quarter and only six points in the fourth en route to the 29-point defeat.
Maci Bozett scored 13 points to lead the way offensively for the Warriors, while Jordan Woodvine also chipped in with 13 points on a 5-for-12 shooting mark.
Turnovers plagued the Warriors in the defeat, as Corban recorded 22 of them on the afternoon.
Corban (1-0) returns to action next weekend on the road in Redding, Calif., when the Warriors will take on Menlo College (Calif.) on Saturday and William Jessup University on Sunday.
