EUGENE, Ore. – Scoring 70 first-half points on Tuesday, the Corban University men's basketball team walloped New Hope Christian College in a 116-50 triumph over the Deacons in a non-conference contest. The win for the Warriors marks the squad's second triumph over New Hope on the 2017-18 campaign.
"Our guys played hard from the jump and we were able to play our bench a lot and get everyone minutes," said Corban head coach Austin Johnson. "It was good to see our energy up after a difficult road trip. This is a challenging week with two more games. We'll begin preparing tomorrow for a very good Willamette team."
The Warriors were absolutely firing on all cylinders early on, playing efficiently offensively while locking down defensively. Whether it was going to Joel Johnson inside or any of Corban's guards nailing a long-range effort from beyond the arc, the Warriors were clicking. By halftime, the lead was 70-23.
In the second half, everyone got in on the action, with all who were available to play seeing minutes. While the Warriors scored just 46 points in the second stanza, Corban allowed just 27 points defensively, continuing to play well on both ends of the floor.
As a team, Corban shot 64.2% from the floor while holding the Deacons to a 29.3% mark. On the glass, Corban hauled in a total of 47 boards, while New Hope tallied just 17 on the night. In addition, the Warriors dished out a season-best 25 assists, playing team basketball all evening long.
Individually, five different players finished in double figures, with Beau Roggenbach totaling a team-best 17 points to go with eight boards. In addition, Joel Johnson was dominant down low with 16 points on a 7-for-12 shooting mark, while AJ Monterossi added 15 points, Chris Martin 14 points, and Denis Kirichenko 10 points.
Corban (6-3) returns to the hardwood on Friday night when the Warriors take on cross-town rival Willamette University. Tipoff at Willamette is slated for an 8 p.m. start.
