Warrior Baseball Stumbles to Biola in 5-3 Defeat

LA MIRADA, Calif. – The Corban University baseball team held a three-run lead midway through Friday's non-conference contest at Biola University (Calif.), but the Eagles rallied and came from behind late to defeat the Warriors, 5-3.

"Tough loss to a very good team," said Corban head coach Jeff McKay. "We had defensive breakdowns after taking the lead. We did not put them away when we had a chance."

Ryan Rosas got the Navy and Gold on the scoreboard first when he ripped an RBI single to right field in the third frame, scoring Josh Ebert on the play.

Jackson Smith then laced an RBI double to left field in the fifth inning to score Rosas, and not long after, Daniel Freiburger scored on a wild pitch to make it a 3-0 advantage for the Warriors.

Biola responded in the bottom half of the fifth, however, taking advantage of a pair of Corban errors en route to tying the contest at 3-3.

In the sixth, the Eagles capitalized on another Warrior miscue, scoring the go-ahead run, and then Biola added an insurance run in the seventh en route to the two-run victory.

Rilyn Lewchuk picked up the tough-luck loss for the Warriors, tossing six innings while allowing four hits and four runs, none of which were earned runs. He struck out three in the defeat.

At the plate, a trio of Warriors tallied two hits, with Smith, Benjamin Liogon, and Tyler Reitz all recording a pair each.

"We really appreciate their work to get the field ready to play in the rain, as they don't usually have to do that," said McKay. "We are very doubtful about playing tomorrow."

Corban (6-6) was scheduled to play Biola in the final game of the series tomorrow at 11 a.m., but due to the heavy rains and forecasted rain for tomorrow, the non-conference contest has been cancelled. Corban is scheduled to return to the diamond on Sunday when it travels to Lancaster to take on the University of Antelope Valley. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
