KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Despite a strong first half, the Corban University men's basketball team faltered against the No. 15-ranked Oregon Tech Owls, falling by a score of 102-75 on Saturday afternoon. The win gives the Owls the season split with the Warriors.
"OIT played lights out today," said head coach Austin Johnson. "We'll have to bounce back quickly to defend another great offensive team in Southern Oregon."
The game progressed much closer in the first half, as the Warriors battled to stay close to the hot-shooting Owls. Shooting 55.9% from the floor, the Navy and Gold trailed by just six as the game headed into halftime. Juniors Chris Martin and Jake Love led the way for the Warriors, scoring 12 points and nine points respectively in the first half.
The second half became a different story, as the No. 15-ranked Oregon Tech's defense stifled the Warriors, creating ten turnovers and holding Corban to just 35.5% shooting from the floor. OIT was able to balloon the lead to 31 before finishing the game comfortably, as they shot 53.8% from the floor and 6-of-14 from beyond the arc in the second half.
The Owls had four players scoring in double-digits, as Brandon Halter scored 25 points; Joel Yellow Owl added 18, while Tyler Van Kirk and Seth Erickson both contributed 15 points. In addition, Van Kirk grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. As a team, Oregon Tech shot 54.9% from the floor while scoring 24 points off turnovers. Creating turnovers were a major factor in the triumph, as the Owls gave the ball up only eight times on the night to the Warriors' 20 turnovers.
For the Warriors, Love led the team in scoring, going 7-of-12 for 18 points on the night, while Martin added 16 points of his own.
Corban (15-14, 8-11 CCC) plays their final regular season game on the road, as they face Southern Oregon tomorrow afternoon. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
