OLYMPIA, Wash. – For the second-straight Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) contest, the Corban University women's basketball team came up just short in Washington, stumbling on Saturday evening to The Evergreen State College, 64-61.
"We got down in the first half and fought back," said Corban head coach Michelle Skyles. "We were able to set up our press and get some buckets late in the first half to close to two. We had 13 offensive boards, but just couldn't convert off of them. We were able to build a lead in the second half, but once they went on a run, we just couldn't finish it out. Evergreen is fighting hard and has improved immensely."
The Warriors had a couple of opportunities to make the go-ahead basket inside of the final minute on Saturday, but the shots fell short, and ultimately the tying shot at the buzzer missed its mark, resulting in the win for the Geoducks.
Evergreen began the game strong defensively on the evening, holding Corban to just eight first-quarter points while scoring 13 of its own. In the second quarter, the Warriors cut the lead to just two points heading into the halftime break, and then in the third stanza, the Warriors exploded for 19 points en route to taking a two-point advantage to the fourth quarter.
In that final period, the Geoducks responded well, building a seven-point lead with three minutes left on the clock, but the Warriors fought back and got to within one point inside of the final minute. Despite having a couple of good looks at the hoop, Corban was unable to capitalize, resulting in the defeat.
One of the keys to the win for Evergreen was its bench chipping in with 23 points to just 10 for Corban. On the night the Geoducks shot 44.0% as a team, while the Warriors shot just 34.5% overall. For Evergreen, Gabi Fenumiai led the way with 20 points and 11 rebounds while Chloee Hunt added 14 points for the Geoducks.
Maddey Pflaumer led the way for the Navy and Gold with 22 points on a 7-for-15 shooting effort while also grabbing nine boards, totaling three blocks and tallying three steals. Sadie Pilgeram registered a 13-point performance on a 5-for-10 mark from the floor, while Maci Benedict also landed in double-figures for Corban with 10 points.
Corban (13-11, 7-9 CCC) returns home next weekend for its last two home games of the year. The Warriors are set to host Warner Pacific College on Friday night, and then on Saturday, Corban will host Multnomah University on Senior Night. Tipoffs are set for 5:30 p.m.
