KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The (RV) Corban University softball team held leads late in both games on Monday at No. 22-ranked Oregon Tech, but the Warriors were unable to hold onto the leads, ultimately losing both Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) contests on walk-off hits. After losing the first game in eight innings, 7-5, the Warriors then dropped the second contest of the day, 5-4.
"Today was tough as we dropped two important games because we didn't finish," said Corban head coach Abigail Farler. "We put ourselves in a position to be able to win, but made some mental mistakes that cost us. We have showed that we are capable of being good, but today was a good reminder that we need every aspect playing at full potential in order to be great. We will learn from today's games and be better tomorrow."
In Monday's opener, the Warriors fell behind in the second inning, 3-0. Corban quickly responded with Taylor Eilders reaching base via a base hit, Maddy Melton walking, and then Jessie Isham blasted a three-run home run over the center-field wall, tying the contest at 3-3.
Eilders then provided the clutch hit an inning later when she laced an RBI double, scoring Aubrene Blas on the play. Corban would add one later in the inning on a bases loaded walk, but that would be all the Warriors would get.
The Warriors once again loaded the bases in the fifth, but the big hit was not there for Corban, leaving three base-runners stranded for the second-straight frame, and it would eventually come back to haunt the Navy and Gold.
In the bottom of the fifth, Oregon Tech scored a pair of runs to tie the contest at 5-5. The game eventually went to extra innings where Rachael Delamare hit a two-out two-run walk-off home run for the Owls in the eighth, giving Oregon Tech the victory.
In total, Corban left 11 runners on base in the defeat while Oregon Tech stranded just seven. Melton led the way at the dish with a 3-for-4 showing and one run scored, while Eilders went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Isham finished the contest with a team-leading three RBI. In addition, Blas went 2-for-4 at the dish with one run scored. Both teams racked up 12 hits in the CCC contest.
In the second game of the day, Corban began well with a three-run home run from Raimee Sluder to give the road squad the advantage. Oregon Tech responded with two in the bottom of the first, but Blas then delivered in the fourth inning with an RBI single to make it 4-2.
The Owls would not go down without a fight, however, pulling one back in the sixth and then tied things up with one out in the seventh inning. Then with two outs and a pair of runners on, Oregon Tech came up clutch once again with a game-winning walk-off RBI double, claiming the 5-4 victory.
Eilders tallied a team-best two hits in the defeat, while as a team, Corban totaled eight for the game. Oregon Tech notched 12 hits overall as a team with Sadie Birch recording a team-high three hits.
Corban (20-6, 8-3 CCC) returns to the diamond tomorrow for two more games against Oregon Tech (17-5, 8-3 CCC), with the first being a CCC Game and the second deemed a non-conference contest. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
