Corban Softball Upsets No. 18 SOU Twice to Clinch CCC Series Victory

SALEM, Ore. – While playing on Warrior Field for the first time during the 2017 season, the (RV) Corban University softball team downed No. 18-ranked Southern Oregon University in upset wins twice on Saturday to clinch the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) series triumph. After winning the opener, 5-2, the Warriors won a nine-inning thriller in game two on a walk-off hit, 6-5.

"I'm really proud of our team for finding a way to earn two wins today," said Corban head coach Abigail Farler. "We had a lot of different people produce, which created solid team wins for us. In the second game, we made a lot of mistakes that could have cost us the game against a great team like Southern Oregon, but our girls fought hard and found a way to win."

The wins move Corban into a tie for first place in the CCC standings with SOU, with both Oregon Tech and Eastern Oregon just a game behind the top-two squads. Corban's wins also snapped SOU's 13-game winning streak.

In game one, Sabrina Boyd did well to get out of a number of jams throughout the contest while pitching for the Warriors, and at the plate, timely hitting got it done to push Corban in front.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the second, Sam Woodley then made it 3-0 in the third with a two-RBI base knock up the middle, and then Raimee Sluder pushed the lead to 5-0 in the same inning with a two-RBI double to right field.

Boyd held off SOU until the seventh inning when the Raiders rallied to score a pair of runs and make things interesting, but the Warriors then locked down defensively and finished SOU off for the win.

In the defeat, Kelsey Randall went 3-for-3 at the plate, while both Kayleen Smith and Taylor Martinez tallied a pair of hits for the Raiders.

Boyd went the distance in the win and scattered 11 hits while allowing two runs and striking out two. At the plate, Woodley went 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Blas tallied a pair of hits for the Navy and Gold in the victory.

Game two saw SOU take advantage of a Warrior error in the first frame to nab the quick lead, but then the Warriors flexed their muscles over the next couple of innings, with Iris Rodriguez and Jessie Isham blasting home runs to put Corban up 4-1.

The Raiders responded however and once again took advantage of Warrior miscues, rallying to tie the game at 4-4 in the fourth inning. SOU then tacked on another in the sixth, but Sluder stepped up for the Navy and Gold in the bottom half of the frame with a two-out RBI single, scoring Woodley to tie the game at 5-5.

The game would eventually go to extra innings, and both teams had chances to score runs in the extra frames, but it was Corban that eventually prevailed in the ninth. While loading the bases with two outs, Woodley capped off a phenomenal day at the plate with a walk-off RBI single to right right-center, scoring Taylor Eilders to lift the Warriors to the thrilling win.

After the contest, Woodley talked about her game-winning hit in a post-game interview:

Woodley finished game two going 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored and the game-winning RBI, while both Rodriguez and Isham recorded two hits apiece.

Out of the bullpen, Kaylee Graney-Patterson had a standout performance for Corban, tossing five innings of relief while giving up just one run, earning the victory.

For SOU, Harlee Donovan went 2-for-5 with two RBI, while Taylor Martinez also notched a pair of hits for the Raiders.

Corban (24-6, 11-3 CCC) returns to action tomorrow against No. 18 SOU (25-6, 11-3 CCC) for two more games, with the first coming at 12 p.m. as a CCC contest, and then the two teams will close out the series with a non-conference game at 2 p.m. Live stats and live video will once again be available through Warrior TV.
