Corban Softball Pitches Shutouts to Complete Series Sweep of No. 18 SOU

SALEM, Ore. – Riding dominant pitching performances, the (RV) Corban University softball team completed the four-game series sweep of No. 18-ranked Southern Oregon University on Sunday afternoon, downing the Raiders 3-0 and 1-0. The victories extend Corban's win streak to six games.

"I am so proud of the team for finding a way to win both games," said Corban head coach Abigail Farler. "The team showed a lot of fight and resiliency. Both Sabrina and Allie threw well for us today and our defense kept us in both games when the offense wasn't producing."

With the wins, the Warriors jump the Raiders and move into sole possession of first place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) standings. The first game of the day counted towards the CCC standings, while the second game of the day counted towards the overall record for both teams as a non-conference contest.

Coming into the series with Corban, the Raiders had not been shut out all year long, and on Sunday, the Warriors changed that statistic with the pair of shutouts.

In game one, Taylor Eilders got things going with a leadoff single for the Warriors, and then eventually Iris Rodriguez brought Eilders in with an RBI single to right field to put Corban in front, 1-0. The Warriors then capitalized on a couple of SOU errors in the third inning, and Sam Woodley delivered with an RBI single to right-center to make it 3-0.

From that point on, Sabrina Boyd continued to shut down the Raiders' offense. SOU tried to rally in the seventh inning and loaded the bases with two outs, but Boyd was able to get out of the jam and secure the victory with the final out, earning her 12th win of the year.

For Boyd, it was her 11th complete game of the year and third complete-game shutout.

At the plate in the win, both Maddy Melton and Aubrene Blas recorded a pair of hits. For SOU, Harlee Donovan, Taylor Martinez, Abigail Lund, and Tyler Burke all notched two hits in the defeat.

In game two, SOU's Lacie Crawford and Corban's Allie Mendez were both dealing in the circle, keeping the opposing teams' offenses at bay. The score remained deadlocked all the way until the seventh inning when Corban capitalized on aggressive base running and an SOU error.

With Raimee Sluder at the dish, Ashlyn Englehorn on first and one out, Sluder laid down a bunt that the Raiders were able to throw Sluder out, but then Corban's aggressive base-running paid off. Englehorn tried to go to third on the throw over to first, forcing the Raiders to try and throw her out, but the throw was low and got past the third baseman, so after tagging third base, Englehorn ran towards home and slid safely head first into home plate to lift the Warriors to the 1-0 walk-off triumph.

Crawford tossed 6.2 innings for SOU (25-8, 11-4 CCC) in the defeat, giving up just four hits and the one unearned run.

Mendez threw a complete game for the Warriors, scattering five hits while allowing no runs. After the games, Mendez and Boyd talked about the wins in an interview:

Corban (26-6, 12-3 CCC) returns to the field next weekend when it travels to Montana for a four-game series at the University of Great Falls. Games are scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
