GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The No. 18-ranked Corban University softball team fell behind twice on Friday at the University of Great Falls, but the Warrior bats then powered their way past the Argos in a pair of Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) wins. After downing UGF in game one in five innings, 13-4, the Warriors came from behind late to win the nightcap, 9-6.
"We had a pretty good day offensively today and were able to put up a lot of runs," said Corban head coach Abigail Farler. "Defensively, we made a lot of mistakes that we need to clean up tomorrow. I'm proud of our team for answering back when we needed to today."
In the opener, the Warriors jumped in front in the first frame with a run, but UGF responded immediately with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
In the second frame, however, Corban got things going at the plate with six runs on five hits, highlighted by back-to-back RBI doubles from Iris Rodriguez and Sam Woodley. Raimee Sluder then made it 8-3 in the third with a home run to center field, and in the fourth, Rodriguez blasted a two-run shot to extend the advantage, leading to the eventual five-inning triumph.
In the victory, Rodriguez went 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored, while Sam Woodley went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored. In addition, Maddy Melton tallied three hits at the dish for the Navy and Gold, while Sluder finished with a pair of hits for the Warriors.
Sabrina Boyd went the distance for Corban in the win, tossing the five innings while allowing six hits and four runs, only three of which were earned. She also struck out three in the victory.
In game two, Taylor Eilders started the game with a bang, smacking a leadoff home run over the fence to put the Warriors in front early. Corban would add another later in the inning, and then two more in the third to take a 4-0 lead.
UGF would load the bases during the third and fourth innings, but Allie Mendez did a good job in the circle avoiding major damage by getting out of the jams.
The Argos eventually got to the Warriors in the fifth, however, scoring five runs to take a 6-5 lead, but Corban would provide the response once again.
In the sixth frame with the bases loaded and two outs, Melton ripped a bases-clearing single down the left-field line to put Corban back in front, 8-6. The Warriors would add one more in the inning before closing the contest out and securing their 14th CCC triumph of the season.
In the victory, Eilders went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored, while Jessie Isham also went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Rodriguez finished game two with a pair of doubles and two RBI, while Melton totaled two runs scored and two RBI.
Allie Mendez tossed 6.1 innings for Corban, dispersing four hits and four runs while striking out nine UGF batters.
Corban (28-6, 14-3 CCC) returns to the field tomorrow when it takes on the Argos for two more games in Great Falls. The first is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. PST and is a CCC contest, while the second game is a non-conference contest and will follow the conclusion of the first.
