KEIZER, Ore. – The Corban University baseball team was dropped a pair of NAIA West contests to No. 17-ranked Lewis-Clark State College on Friday afternoon at Salem-Keizer Volcanoes Stadium, losing 6-2 and 5-3.
"Two more tough losses against a good team," said Corban head coach Jeff McKay. "We just can't get hitting and pitching on the same day. The Warriors played hard today, and we are looking forward to playing well tomorrow for the seniors."
The first game of the day began with Corban in a 4-0 hole before the game even started because it was the completion of a game back in March that was halted with LCSC leading 4-0 at the time. The Warriors actually played quite well in the contest, with the Corban pitchers only allowing LCSC to score twice more during seven innings on Friday.
Unfortunately, the Warriors were only able to tack on two runs offensively in the contest, resulting in the four-run defeat.
In the loss, Vince Gonzalez went 3-for-4 to lead the way for Corban and was the only Warrior player with three hits in the game. On the mound, Jonathan Russomano did a great job in relief, tossing 4.1 innings while giving up just the two runs while striking out four.
For LCSC, Tyler Burch threw all seven of the innings that were played in the game on Friday, dispersing seven hits while allowing two runs, only one of which was earned.
In game two, Corban took the lead in the third when Jackson Smith ripped and RBI single to left-center, scoring Josh Ebert on the play. The Warriors would add a run later in the inning, but Lewis-Clark State responded with three runs in the fourth to take the lead.
Gonzalez came up big for Corban in the fifth on an RBI single to left-center, scoring Daniel Freiburger to tie the game at 3-3.
The game remained that way until the ninth when LCSC scored twice to nab the two-run advantage, and Corban was unable to rally, resulting in the defeat.
For Corban in the loss, Rilyn Lewchuk had another good outing, going seven innings while giving up three unearned runs and striking out six. At the plate, Ebert and Smith both finished with a pair of hits for Corban.
For LCSC, Brock Ephan notched two hits in the victory, while Anthony Balderas came on in relief and earned the win, going four innings while giving up just one hit and no runs.
The two teams return to action tomorrow at Salem-Keizer Volcanoes Stadium. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
