No. 15 Corban Softball Clinches Share of CCC Title, Booking Ticket to Nationals

SALEM, Ore. – The No. 15-ranked Corban University softball team may not have won on Friday, but the Warriors still clinched at least a share of the 2017 Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) regular-season title thanks to a Southern Oregon loss, and because Corban owns the tiebreaker over SOU, the Warriors have garnered the CCC's first automatic berth to the NAIA National Tournament. On the day, Corban lost a high-scoring affair against the Carroll College Fighting Saints, 10-8.

For Corban, it marks the program's second-ever CCC regular-season championship, with the only other time being in 2013 when the Warriors won the title. With one win on Saturday vs. Carroll, the Warriors will earn the CCC Title outright and would not have to share the championship if SOU were to win against EOU down in Ashland. For Corban, it marks the third time in program history that the Warriors have earned a berth to the NAIA National Championships.

CCC Standings

"Today's loss was tough," said Corban head coach Abigail Farler. "We fought back after we got down, but didn't shut the door when we had the chance. We will come back better tomorrow and improve our pitching, offense, and defense."

After the Warriors jumped in front in the first, 1-0, Carroll responded in a big way in the third inning with six runs, capped off by a three-run home run by Tianna Sell.

Jessie Isham pulled one back for Corban in the third with an RBI double to right field, and then Iris Rodriguez made it a three-run ballgame with an RBI single in the fifth.

The Warriors exploded for five runs in the sixth, with Chaleigh Kirkwood providing the big initial RBI single up the middle, and then aggressive base-running put the Warriors up 8-6 heading into the seventh.

Carroll put together a rally of its own, however, scoring four times to retake the lead at 10-8.

In the bottom half of the inning, Corban was unable to muster another comeback, resulting in the defeat.

In the win for Carroll, Allison Bayer, Ashley Davis, Jaylin Kenney, and Sell all finished with a pair of hits, and Sell led the way with four RBI.

For the Warriors, Melton went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Rodriguez also went 2-for-4 with one RBI.

The loss marks Corban's first CCC loss in over a month, ending the streak of four-straight CCC sweeps.

Corban (37-8, 21-4) returns to the diamond tomorrow for Senior Day vs. Carroll (14-18, 9-13 CCC). The Warriors and Fighting Saints will begin at 2 p.m. for the doubleheader, with Senior Day festivities beginning prior to the first game.
