SALEM, Ore. – On a day that saw three teams eliminated from the 2017 Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Tournament, presented by U.S. Bank, the second-seeded Southern Oregon University Raiders upset top-seeded Corban University to advance to Monday's CCC Tournament Championship contest.
"It is always tough to lose a game when you feel like you battle hard throughout the game," said Corban head coach Abigail Farler. "In the end, we didn't capitalize with the runners on when we needed to and they did. We will come back ready to go tomorrow and improve on our weaknesses from today."
Day Two Results:
Game 5: College of Idaho 10, British Columbia 1 (6 innings) --- UBC Eliminated
Game 6: Oregon Tech 8, Eastern Oregon 7 --- EOU Eliminated
Game 7: Southern Oregon 6, Corban 5 (9 innings)
Game 8: Oregon Tech 7, College of Idaho 1 --- C of I Eliminated
In the game that saw SOU win and advance to the CCC Tournament Championship contest, it was Corban that actually went in front with three runs in the top of the first before the Raiders answered with two in the bottom half of the frame to keep it close. While Corban added another in the third, SOU tied it up at 4-4 with two runs in the bottom half of the third.
The Raiders then pushed in front in the fourth with another run before Corban responded with a two-out game-tying hit in the sixth by Sam Woodley.
Eventually, the game went to extra innings, and both teams got out of multiple jams on the way to the ninth inning. After the Raiders escaped a bases-loaded jam in the top of the ninth, a bizarre sequence of plays led to SOU's win in the bottom half of the inning.
After Corban threw out a runner at home on a call that was contested and talked about for a long time, SOU's next batter struck out and the game looked to be headed to the 10th inning. But the strikeout was in the dirt, meaning that the Warriors needed to make a throw down to first base to record the out. The throw sailed over the first baseman's head, allowing SOU's runner to score from third and win the game.
In the victory, Gabby Sandoval was outstanding, tossing 8.1 innings in relief, dispersing eight hits while allowing just two runs. Offensively, Harlee Donovan went 3-for-5 with one RBI in the contest, while Kelsey Randall tallied a pair of hits.
For Corban in the defeat, Sabrina Boyd tossed six innings in relief while allowing nine hits and two runs, with only one being earned. At the plate, both Iris Rodriguez and Paige Martin tallied a pair of hits for the Warriors.
The other team that remained alive and will face Corban at 11 a.m. on Monday was Oregon Tech, as the Owls held on to win against Eastern Oregon early in the day, 8-7, while then rallying to defeat College of Idaho, 7-1, in the final contest of the afternoon. Oregon Tech was led by Kelly Scott's complete-game performance in the circle against the Yotes, allowing just four hits and one run. At the plate, five different players recorded two hits, with Cassidy Hoglund totaling four RBI.
In Oregon Tech's first win of the day over EOU, the Owls had to overcome a grand slam that was hit by Cheyenne Barker. That grand slam was part of a massive rally that ultimately wasn't enough for the Mountaineers in a season-ending loss.
The first game of the day saw C of I down UBC by nine runs, and it was Colette Robert who did it all in the win, going the distance in the circle for the victory while also notching a 2-for-5 performance at the plate with five RBI and two runs scored. C of I's loss later in the day against Oregon Tech ended its season.
