WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The No. 10-ranked Corban University men's soccer team ran its winning streak to three-straight matches to begin the 2017 campaign thanks to a 2-0 triumph at Whitman College on Saturday night. All three of Corban's victories have come on the road thus far for the Warriors.
"I think we showed improvement higher on the field tonight, and the guys in the back half made good decisions with the ball," said Corban head coach Aaron Lewis. "There is still so much we can improve, but we are taking steps in the right direction."
From the start on Saturday evening, the Warriors showed the ability to possess the ball against the Blues, and over the course of the first half, generated some good attacking sequences, but the final pass just wasn't quite there.
In the second half, Corban came out firing and almost went in front on a few occasions. First, the Warriors blasted a shot off the left post midway through the second stanza, and not long after, the Whitman goalkeeper made a heroic diving save to keep Corban off the board. As the half continued on with the match scoreless, Corban again blasted a shot from the top of the 18-yard box off the post, making it seem as if a goal was not to be.
Eventually in the 79th minute of play, Julio Miranda fed Timur Zhividze with a pass in the attacking third, and after taking a touch to his left, Zhividze ripped a left-footed shot into the lower-left corner, putting the Warriors up 1-0.
A few minutes later in the 83rd minute of play, Christian Silva made a long run up the right side and cut the ball back to an onrushing Alex Segovia at the top of the box. Segovia made no mistake, hitting a one-timed laser into the back of the net to double Corban's advantage and seal the win.
For the game, Corban held the shots advantage, 16-13, and also the edge in corner kicks, 4-2. Both Segovia and Zhividze tallied five shots apiece, while Rolando Velazquez recorded four shots.
Defensively, it was undoubtedly Corban's best match of the 2017 campaign as a group, recording the team's first shutout of the year. While Jordan Farr made six key saves, the entire backline served as a cohesive unit in the win.
Corban (3-0) returns to Salem next Friday for its 2017 home-opener when it hosts Westmont College (Calif.). Kickoff on September 8 is slated for 4 p.m. at the CFC Soccer Complex. If you can't make it to the match, live stats and live video will be available.
