HELENA, Mont. – Despite giving up an early goal on the road in frigid conditions, the No. 5-ranked Corban University men's soccer team came from behind to defeat Carroll College (Mont.) in Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) action on Friday, 4-2.
"Today we overcame adversity together to shift momentum in our favor," said Corban head men's soccer coach Aaron Lewis. "That is a major attribute for a team that aspires to do big things."
On a bit of a scramble in the box, Carroll was able to go in front in the eighth minute of play, but Corban provided the response, as Timur Zhividze buried a shot into the back of the net from the right side in the 27th minute to tie the contest.
The Warriors would go in front just before the halftime whistle, as Nathaniel Cheney followed up a Rolando Velazquez shot and banged it past the goalkeeper to give Corban its first lead of the match.
Carroll received an opportunity to bring the game level in the second half thanks to a penalty kick called against the Warriors, and the Fighting Saints finished the opportunity, tying the game at 2-2.
Less than two minutes later, however, Nic Farr's relentless work down the right side and a nifty move in the box resulted in him being fouled, earning Corban a penalty kick. Zhividze stepped up to the spot and slotted his penalty-kick shot home, giving the Warriors a 3-2 lead.
Eventually in the 81st minute of action, Cheney rose up above the Carroll defense and headed the ball into the top-left corner off a perfect cross from Rolando Velazquez, securing the key road triumph for the Navy and Gold.
Late in the match, Jordan Farr needed to sprawl to his left to make a key finger-tip save, helping preserve the win for the Warriors.
Both teams finished with 14 shots and three corner kicks in the CCC match.
Corban (7-0-1, 3-0-0 CCC) returns to the pitch on Saturday when it travels to take on the University of Providence. Kickoff in Great Falls is slated for 2:30 p.m. PDT.
