SALEM, Ore. – The Oregon Tech Owls edged out the Corban University women's basketball team in a hard-fought battle on Friday night, 58-49.
"Our team battled hard tonight, but being short-handed was just too much," said Corban head coach Michelle Skyles. "Treasure, Hannah, and Lindsay played well for us tonight. We had some kids that really fought well and stepped up, but we just couldn't quite get it done against a team that executed well."
Both teams battled throughout the contest, with much of the game being an intense back-and-forth affair between the two Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) squads. The Warriors held a narrow advantage for the majority of the first half, entering the locker room with a 30-28 lead. However, the Owls would respond with a strong second half, outscoring the Warriors 30-19 to claim the victory, by holding Corban to only seven points in the third quarter.
Oregon Tech's balanced offensive attack was spearheaded by Bailey Nelson, who led the team with 12 points on four rebounds. Mikaela Shumaker totaled 11 points on the evening, and Abby Kreiser notched an additional 10 points in the victory. In the paint, Nohea Waiwaiole racked-up a team-best 11 boards for the Owls.
As a team, the Owls (13-7, 6-4 CCC) shot 37% from the field, while going 3-for-8 from beyond the arc. Oregon Tech also won the battle at the glass, out-rebounding Corban 42-38. The Owls used this to their advantage down the stretch, tallying 16 second-chance points in the triumph.
For Corban, Treasure Farmer led the way with a strong overall effort, scoring 14 points on five assists and five rebounds. Lindsay Asplund also finished with double-digit scoring, tallying 10 points of her own. Hannah Shore produced a quality performance on both sides of the ball, notching seven points, five rebounds, and a pair of steals.
On the night, the Warriors shot 32.1% from the field, and 26.3% from three-point range.
The Warriors (9-8, 5-5 CCC) will return to CCC action tomorrow, as they are set to host No.10-ranked Southern Oregon University in another big conference match-up. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
