LINCOLN, Calif. – While scoring the most runs the program has scored in nearly two years, the Corban University baseball team won twice on Saturday against William Jessup University, earning the series split on the road in California. While taking game one in a thriller, 8-5, the Warriors then blasted WJU in the final game of the series in seven innings, 17-7.
"It was a great bounce-back day for Warrior Baseball," said Corban head coach Derek Legg. "The boys played hard all day long and were committed to playing our style of baseball. I challenged them before the game to control the momentum and they did just that. When we lost it, we got it right back, and that made a difference today. I'm proud of these guys. Go Warriors!"
The 17 runs scored in game two were the most the Warriors had scored in a single game since 2016. Game one, however, was a much tighter affair, and the Warriors made things interesting in the end and got out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth to secure Corban's first win of the year.
In the game-one triumph, Rilyn Lewchuk went five innings, dispersing six hits while allowing three runs en route to earning his first win of the 2018 campaign. Jonathan Russomano came on for the Warriors in the ninth with the bases juiced and got out of the jam, striking out the final batter to secure the victory.
At the dish, four players finished with two hits, as Josh Ebert, Ethan Brag, Drew Loera, and Ben Ross all finished with a pair of hits each, while Bragg, Loera, Ross and Brock Myklebust each recorded two RBI for the Navy and Gold.
Game two was a contest that saw Corban take a 4-0 advantage before William Jessup tied things up at 4-4 in the fourth.
After a scoreless fifth frame, Corban racked up nine runs in the sixth inning and four more runs in the seventh en route to the 10-run triumph. In the win, Corban totaled a season-high 15 hits as a team, with Daniel Freiburger leading the way at the dish, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored. In addition, both Andrew Axmaker and Jared Bell finished with three RBI to lead Corban in the category.
The two wins marked the first for Derek Legg as head coach of the Corban University baseball team.
Corban (2-2) takes a break from action before returning to the field in two weeks for a series against the University of Antelope Valley on February 2-3 in California.
