Corban Women’s Soccer Season Ends in CCC Quarterfinal Loss to #1 EOU

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – Riley Smetzler struck first for the Corban University women's soccer team in the 10th minute of play on Wednesday in a Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Tournament Quarterfinal, but the goal didn't hold up, as top-seeded Eastern Oregon University came from behind to defeat the Warriors, 4-1. The loss ends Corban's 2018 season.

"We came out well in the first half and scored first! We had a good rhythm and moved the ball well, but then we dropped a little bit too deep and allowed them to play," said Corban head coach Likius Hafeni. "We conceded three goals from set pieces and that was tough to bounce back from! I am proud of my team and the way they tried to play and win the game. We will look to learn from our mistakes!"

Smetzler blasted a free kick on frame in the 10th minute of play, and after it took a deflection, it found the back of the net to put the Warriors up, 1-0.

The Warriors were certainly on the front foot for much of the first part of the first half, but then the regular-season champion Mountaineers responded with a goal in the 35th minute of play, sending the match into halftime tied at 1-1.

In the second half, EOU goals in the 52nd, 76th, and 77th minutes ultimately doomed the Navy and Gold, resulting in the 4-1 defeat.

Hannah Shore did have a good look on goal midway through the second stanza that would have tied the match, but a good save from Cydni Cottrell kept the match in EOU's favor.

The Mountaineers finished with 28 shots to Corban's eight. In the defeat, Elizabeth Brock totaled eight saves.

Corban's season finishes with a 9-9 overall record and yet another trip to the CCC Tournament.
