Corban Women’s Basketball Unable to Upend No. 14 Eastern Oregon in 72-64 Defeat

SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University women's basketball team held a seven-point lead at the halftime break on Sunday evening, but the No. 14-ranked Eastern Oregon University Mountaineers stormed back to defeat the Warriors in the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center, 72-64.

"We came out and really competed today and did a lot of the things we came in wanting to do," said Corban head coach Bill Pilgeram. "Our start to the game, defense, and ball movement were much improved."

Corban came out firing in the first quarter, but EOU traded punches with the Warriors and actually led by two points at the end of the first 10 minutes. The Navy and Gold clamped down defensively in quarter number two, holding the 14th-ranked Mountaineers to just nine points while scoring 18 to take the seven-point advantage into the locker rooms.

The third quarter was a different story, however, as the Mountaineers hit almost everything they shot, racking up 28 points to retake the lead and control of the contest.

The Warriors kept it close throughout much of the fourth quarter, but EOU's experienced squad closed out the game for the eight-point triumph.

"It was a great basketball game, and you know a team like Eastern was going to make a run," said Pilgeram. "They hit some tough shots in that third quarter that were defended pretty well."

Maren Herrud scored a team-leading 20 points in the victory on a 5-for-9 shooting mark for the Mountaineers, while Maya Ah You Dias tallied 18 points and seven boards in the victory.

For Corban, veteran Jordan Woodvine eclipsed the 20-point mark with 23 total points on the night on an efficient 9-for-15 shooting effort while also grabbing seven rebounds. In addition, Treasure Farmer totaled 16 points while Emily Yost chipped in 10 points.

As a team, the Warriors shot 39.0% from the floor, while the Mountaineers finished the night shooting 43.6% overall.

Corban (6-6, 1-2) returns to the hardwood on Tuesday afternoon when it hosts Linfield College in non-conference contest. Tipoff is slated for 12 p.m. in the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
