No. 5 Warrior Softball Splits Doubleheader with Arizona Christian

PHOENIX, Ariz. – After leaving nine runners on base in key situations in a 5-1 game-one loss, the No. 5-ranked Corban University softball team turned things around in game two against Arizona Christian University, leading to a bounce-back 7-1 game-two win.

The Warriors jumped in front in the first frame with an RBI single from Sam Woodley in Friday's opener, but a pair of home runs from ACU in the bottom half of the first put the Firestorm in front, 4-1.

Arizona Christian eventually made it 5-1, and throughout the contest, the Warriors left runners stranded, including the bases loaded twice.

Maddy Melton, Mahina Chong, and Woodley each recorded two hits in the defeat for the Warriors.

Game two saw Woodley once again rip an RBI single to center field in the first inning, putting Corban up by a run early.

While the Firestorm tied things up in the bottom half of the frame, Corban used aggressive base running to take the lead back in the third, 2-1.

In the fifth inning, Megan Rybar laced a two-RBI double to right-center, scoring Chong and Melton, and then Jessie Isham followed that up with an RBI double to score Rybar later in the inning. Up 5-1, the Warriors eventually added a couple of more runs, resulting in the six-run victory.

Melton finished 4-for-4 at the dish with four runs scored, while Chong went 2-for-4 and Woodley finished 3-for-4 with one RBI. In addition, Rybar went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

In the circle, Corban's Kaylee Graney-Patterson went the distance for a complete game performance, dispersing eight hits while allowing just one run and striking out two.

"We competed in two tough games today," said Corban head coach Abigail Farler. "We gave up too many runs in the first game, and didn't produce clutch hits when we needed to with runners in scoring position. In the second game, we were able to bounce back well. I'm proud of how the team worked together on offense and defense to get the W. Kaylee pitched a great game and had an awesome first win of the year."

Corban (2-1) returns to the diamond tomorrow to take on Ottawa University (Ariz.) for a 12 p.m. PST doubleheader. Neither live stats nor live video will be available.
