No. 5 Corban Softball Smashes Ottawa in Doubleheader Domination

SURPRISE, Ariz. – While utilizing the long ball and aggressive base running, the No. 5-ranked Corban University softball team dominated Ottawa University (Ariz.) on Saturday, sweeping the Spirit with a 13-3 win (5 innings), and a 7-0 shutout in the nightcap. The two wins give the Warriors the season sweep of Ottawa, winning all three games against the Spirit in Arizona.

"I'm very proud of how our group competed today," said Corban head coach Abigail Farler. "We made a lot of great plays on defense and took some great risks. On the bases we had a lot of kids step up and show us their ability to run. We had two great pitching performances out of Rachel and Ally today."

Game one started with a Maddy Melton triple to left field, but then two outs were recorded with no runs scored. Then Sam Woodley doubled down the left-field line to score Melton and Jessie Isham followed that up with her first home run of the 2018 campaign, blasting one over the center field fence to make it 3-0.

From that point on in the frame, Corban scored five more runs with two outs, making all eight runs in the first inning come with two outs.

In the third inning, Kaylee Buhrkuhl and Woodley both blasted two-run home runs over the center field fence, putting the Navy and Gold in front, 12-0.

In the 10-run triumph in just the five innings, Woodley finished 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Mahina Chong went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Additionally, both Ashlyn Englehorn and Sophia Barbosa notched a pair of hits for the Warriors in the triumph.

In the circle, Rachel White went the distance, tossing five innings while allowing just three runs and earning her first win of the year.

Game two was more of the same, as in her first-career start for the Warrior pitching staff, freshman Ally Crakes went the full seven innings, allowing just three hits and no runs, striking out one.

At the plate in the game-two win, the Warriors jumped in front with three runs in the second and another in the third to take the comfortable lead, 4-0. An insurance run in the fifth and two more in the sixth put the game to sleep, securing the victory and sweep of Ottawa.

Individually, Isham led the way with a 3-for-4 showing and two runs scored, while Woodley capped off her good day with two more hits and two RBI. Moreover, Kasie Kloempken went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Tabby Humphrey went 3-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.

Corban (4-1) returns to the diamond tomorrow at 10 a.m. PST for a doubleheader against Benedictine University at Mesa.
