Pitching and Grand Slam Lift No. 5 Corban Softball to Sweep of Benedictine Mesa

CHANDLER, Ariz. – Warrior senior Sabrina Boyd got back to her winning ways on Sunday, and the Warrior bats rode the long ball en route to sweeping Benedictine Mesa (Ariz.) in non-conference action. After winning the opener, 3-0, the Warriors used big hitting and great defense to earn the triumph in game two.

"We were able to pick up two great wins today," said Corban head coach Abigail Farler. "We had some key defensive stops and great pitching from all three pitchers. Offensively, we executed well a few times which gave us the runs we needed. In addition, we saw some very key performances from our freshmen today!"

In Sunday's opener, Boyd tossed all seven innings, dispersing six hits while allowing no runs in the victory. She also struck out three in her first complete-game shutout of the 2018 season.

At the plate, it was just one inning that was needed to get the job done, as Ashlyn Englehorn, Sophia Barbosa, and Maddy Melton all provided RBI plays in the second frame en route to the three-run triumph.

Game two saw Corban rookie Megan Rybar step up to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs in the third, and after taking a couple of strikes, she blasted an 0-2 pitch over the right-field fence for a grand slam.

Down 4-0, Benedictine scored a run in the fourth and the fifth, but standout Warrior defensive plays limited the home side from scoring anymore, getting out of some precarious jams.

In the seventh inning, Corban tacked on three more runs, securing the 7-3 victory.

"We saw areas that we want to continue to grow, which is great," said Farler. "Our team is still learning their identity, and I'm excited to see how we learn and grow moving forward."

In the victory, Rybar finished with five RBI, while both Maddy Melton and Tatum Prechtel registered a pair of hits for the Navy and Gold.

In the circle, Ally Crakes earned her second win in as many days, and Kaylee Graney-Patterson came on in relief to earn the save. Crakes allowed just two runs, only one of which was earned, while Graney-Patterson only allowed one run in 2.1 innings pitched.

Corban (6-1) closes out its Arizona road trip with a pair of games in Phoenix against Embry-Riddle University (Ariz.) on Monday. First pitch at St. Agnes HS is slated for a 12 p.m. first pitch. The games were originally slated to be played in Prescott, but now have been moved to Phoenix due to forecasted bad weather in Prescott on Monday.
