PHOENIX, Ariz. – The opportunities were there for the No. 5-ranked Corban University softball team on Monday in the final doubleheader of the long Arizona road trip, but the Warriors were unable to capitalize, resulting in a pair of losses to Embry-Riddle (Ariz.). After dropping the opener, 8-7, Corban then lost the nightcap, 4-2.
"We suffered two tough losses today," said Corban head coach Abigail Farler. "I think we lacked the energy to compete hard enough to earn wins in both games. Although we saw some great defensive stops, great contact at the plate, and some strong relief pitching, it wasn't enough to walk away with the wins. We need to learn from today and fight harder in the future."
With two outs and the tying run at third and go-ahead run over at first in game one, the Warriors popped out to end the game. In game two, the tying run was at the plate with an opportunity to extend the contest, but the at-bat did not result in what Corban was looking for, resulting in the loss.
For the Warriors, while playing nine games over the course of five days, the timely hits and pitches just weren't there on Monday, but the Warriors will head home with six wins in those nine contests. On Monday, the Warriors left a total of 16 runners on base over the course of the two games, stranding eight in each contest.
Game one saw Mahina Chong have a solid performance at the dish, as she went s-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. In addition, Jessie Isham went 2-for-3 for the Warriors in the defeat.
In the nightcap, each of the first two innings looked promising, but both ended with runners stranded and no runs scored. Maddy Melton and Megan Rybar all finished with two hits apiece in the loss.
"Overall, this trip to Arizona was an incredible opportunity to see what our team is made of," said Farler. "We were able to face great competition and learn a lot about the players in our program."
Corban (6-3) returns to action this coming Saturday/Sunday for the Cavalier Classic. The Warriors will play four games, all of which are against NCAA Division II foes.
