EUGENE, Ore. – The Corban University women's basketball team had a chance to win it late in regulation on Tuesday evening in the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Tournament Quarterfinals, presented by U.S. Bank, but the shot fell short, and the Warriors ultimately lost in overtime to Northwest Christian University, 63-59.
"Northwest Christian came out with a lot of intensity early," said Corban head coach Michelle Skyles. "Our defense kept us in the game all night, but they took us out of our offensive flow. I can't be more proud of our team and how they fought to get back in the game and gave ourselves a chance to win."
Down 50-49 with less than 20 seconds remaining, Jordan Woodvine beat two defenders off the dribble, drove to the hole and dished off the perfect pass to Emily Yost who finished off the play with a layup, giving the Warriors the 51-50 lead.
Northwest Christian was fouled on the ensuing possession, but made just 1-of-2 free throws, resulting in the Warriors having a chance to win it on the last shot. Corban drove to the hole once again with the clock winding down, but the shot fell short, and NCU missed its shot on the other end, sending the contest to overtime.
In the overtime stanza, NCU (23-5) jumped out to a seven-point lead before Corban was able to score its first points midway through the five-minute extra period, and from that point on, it was an uphill battle for the Warriors to try to climb back into the contest. In the end, the Beacons made their free throws, and Corban fell by the four-point margin.
On the evening, Jordan Woodvine led all scorers with 29 points, shooting 11-of-19 from the field while also hauling a game-high 12 rebounds. Also reaching double-digits for the Warriors in Tuesday's defensive battle was Jordan Rasberry, as she shot 6-for-11 from the floor for 13 points and six boards.
"We couldn't overcome the turnovers and I felt some things didn't fall our way or we would be moving on," said Skyles. "We battled with one of the top teams in the nation tonight. Jordan Woodvine had a great scoring night, and our players fought so hard and I couldn't be more proud. Hard to see Maci go out when she played the game of her life last week and gave everything she had tonight."
As a team, Corban shot 41.1% from the field, 28.6% from downtown, and 75.0% from the free-throw line. On the evening, the Warriors committed 25 turnovers, resulting in 29 points for the Beacons. The Warriors did perform well in the paint, outscoring NCU, 32-26, and took advantage of scoring 10 second-chance points to just five for the Beacons. In addition, Corban won the rebounding battle, 46-32.
The Warriors finish the 2017-18 campaign with a 13-15 overall record and a trip to the CCC Tournament for the 10th-straight season.
