Corban Men’s Basketball Season Ends on Buzzer-Beater against Owls

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – While overcoming adversity all season long, the No. 6-seeded Corban University men's basketball team's season ended up coming to a close on Wednesday night in the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Tournament Quarterfinal, falling to No. 3-seeded Oregon Tech on a buzzer beater, 65-63.

"In my 10 years as a college coach, I've never been more impressed or inspired by a group of young men," said Corban head coach Austin Johnson. "Tonight's ending doesn't change that at all. I don't believe there is a team in the country at any level that could go through the injuries and loss of personnel that we did and still compete so hard and have a chance to win big games. We're hurting as a group tonight, but our hearts are full."

For Corban, the final overall record of 17-13 is the best winning percentage 56.7% for the program in 13 years, dating back to the 2004-05 season.

The first half of play was highlighted by Jett Sobotta swishing a shot at the halftime buzzer from 3/4-court length, giving Corban the three-point lead at the break.

In the second half, the Warriors built a lead of as many as nine points, but Oregon Tech began chipping into that deficit midway through, and eventually took a lead late. A pair of late Joel Johnson dunks tied the contest at 63-63, however, with less than 30 seconds remaining on the clock.

Johnson then blocked a shot by Mitchell Fink with five seconds remaining, but the shot went out of bounds, giving the Owls one last opportunity. Fink once again put up a last-second chance, and it missed, but the Owls were there to tip it in at the buzzer, just beating the horn to secure the two-point win.

For Oregon Tech, it marked just the second time in the last six meetings that the Owls were able to defeat the Warriors.

"I'm thankful for our five seniors and what they've done to push this program forward," said Coach Johnson. "I'm thankful for the tremendous support of my assistants, and I'll continue to be excited about the future of Corban basketball. God is good."

Joel Johnson was a beast down low for the Warriors all night long, scoring a team-leading 19 points on a 7-for-10 shooting effort while also grabbing 12 boards and totaling three blocks. In their final-ever games donning the Navy and Gold, AJ Monterossi finished with 17 points for the Warriors, while Andrew Evans chipped in eight points and Caleb Dozier totaled six points and eight boards.

For the Owls, Fink finished with 33 points in the win, and no one else hit double-digits. With the result, Oregon Tech advances to the CCC Semis to take on No. 2-seeded Warner Pacific on Saturday night.
