BOTHELL, Wash. – Consistent pitching. Timely hitting. Solid defense. Those are always key pieces for any team looking to win softball games. Corban University got all of those things over the weekend, and on Saturday, the No. 5-ranked Warrior softball team completed the series sweep of Northwest University, winning 5-0 and 7-3 in the doubleheader.
"I'm so proud of the team for their effort, attitudes, and aggressiveness today," said Corban head coach Abigail Farler. "Our pitchers all did their part to give us a chance to win. Our defense made some great stops in both games and offensively we put the ball in play hard consistently. These were team wins again and a lot of fun to be a part of."
The first three wins of the series counted towards Corban's Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) record, while the fourth game of the series was a non-conference contest.
Game one was once again highlighted by shut-down pitching from Sabrina Boyd. For the second-straight day, Boyd went the distance, and this time she went the full seven innings in the complete-game shutout, allowing only four hits while striking out nine.
At the dish, Jessie Isham provided the biggest hit of the ballgame, launching a two-run home run over the left-field fence in the fifth inning, putting the game out of reach with the five-run lead.
In the triumph, Kaylee Buhrkuhl finished 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI, while Maddy Melton and Mahina Chong both went 2-for-4, with Chong totaling two RBI.
Game two saw Corban jump out to a quick 3-0 lead after three frames, but the Eagles did pull one back in the fourth to make it 3-1. It was 4-2 after six innings, but then Chong put the game to rest, ripping a two-run home run over the left-field wall to help secure the victory.
Four different players finished with two hits apiece, as Melton, Buhrkuhl, Chong, and Alyssa Doty all went 2-for-4 on the evening. Both of Doty's hits in the triumph were doubles. In addition, Isham finished 1-for-1 with one RBI, two runs scored, and a team-leading three walks.
In the circle, Kaylee Graney-Patterson went 5.1 innings, allowing five hits and two runs, neither of which were earned. In relief, Rachel White went 1.2 innings, allowing one hit and one run.
Corban (12-4, 4-0 CCC) returns home next week for the first time during the 2018 campaign. The Warriors are slated to host Northwest Christian University on Friday and Saturday at Warrior Field, with Friday's first pitch slated for 2 p.m.
