CALDWELL, Idaho – It took eight innings in game one on Saturday, but the No. 13-ranked Corban University softball team pulled out a thrilling 2-1 win over College of Idaho to claim the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) series victory. The Warriors then went on to win the non-conference contest, 9-1 in five innings, finishing out the overall series win over the Yotes.
"I am very proud of how our team competed today," said Corban head coach Abigail Farler. "We did not have a perfect performance in game one, but the girls fought hard for each other, and we were able to walk away with a W. Sabrina and Ally both had great games for us and gave us the opportunity to win. We saw solid offense from so many players – it was a lot of fun to be a Warrior today."
Game one was an absolute pitchers' duel, as Corban's Sabrina Boyd and C of I's Colette Robert both had shutouts going through six innings.
Jessie Isham changed that as she blasted a solo home run over the center field fence in the top of the seventh, putting the Warriors in front. The Yotes responded, however, scoring the tying run in the bottom half of the seventh to send the game to extras.
In the eighth, Tabby Humphrey came in to score the winning run, taking advantage of an errant throw by the Yotes' defense, putting the Warriors in front, 2-1.
Boyd and the Warrior defense locked down in the bottom half of the extra frame, resulting in the key win that clinched the CCC series triumph. Boyd finished the contest with the eight innings pitched while striking out four, dispersing five hits and allowing just one run. At the dish, Isham finished 2-for-3 with the big home run in the seventh.
Game two saw the Navy and Gold explode offensively, and it was Kaylee Buhrkuhl that launched a home run in the first inning to left center to put the Warriors up by a run early.
While C of I tied things up in the second, Isham continued on her hot weekend, launching a grand slam in the third frame to put Corban back in front. The Warriors would add four more in the fifth, resulting in the mercy-rule five-inning victory.
Isham finished 2-for-3 with five RBI and two runs scored, while Megan Rybar went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. In addition, Mahina Chong and Maddy Melton both went 2-for-3 at the plate as well.
In the circle, Ally Crakes went all five innings, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out five in the win.
Corban (26-9, 15-4 CCC) returns to the field on Sunday for another CCC doubleheader, this time against the University of British Columbia. The two games will be played in Caldwell, and live stats are set to be available HERE.
