CALDWELL, Idaho – The No. 13-ranked Corban University softball team lost a heartbreaker in Sunday's opener in 11 innings to the University of British Columbia, 4-3, but the Warriors bounced back for a dominant 7-0 victory in game two. The two games were the second and third contests of a series that began back in early March but was rescheduled due to snow in Canada.
Corban earned the series win against UBC, taking two out of three from the Thunderbirds dating back to the early win in March. The win clinched a spot in the 2018 Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Tournament for the Warriors, and moved Corban into a tie currently for first place in the CCC standings with Southern Oregon. Currently, there are five teams that all could still win the CCC regular-season title with six conference games to play.
"The team did a great job of finding the energy to compete in game two," said Corban head coach Abigail Farler. "In game one, we came out flat and never found our rhythm. Ally threw a great game two to get us the win today and ultimately the series win. Offensively, we were able to string hits together in the second game and execute some plays which was nice. We definitely need to find a way to play our style of ball consistently going into this final stretch of conference play."
Corban outhit UBC in Sunday's opener, 10-6, but the Warriors were unable to hold onto a 3-0 lead and the Thunderbirds sent the contest to extra innings. It went all the way until the 11th frame in which the Warriors eventually made a defensive mistake, and the Thunderbirds capitalized and scored the game-winning run.
Both Megan Rybar and Maddy Melton finished with two hits apiece in the defeat.
Game two saw Corban jump in front and score a run in the first and second innings on RBI singles from Mahina Chong and Tatum Prechtel. From that point on, the Warriors poured in five more runs en route to riding Ally Crakes in the circle to a shutout victory.
Crakes was outstanding, as the rookie went all seven innings while allowing just five hits and zero runs for her second complete-game shutout of her young career. In the performance, she struck out five Thunderbird batters.
At the plate, Kaylee Buhrkuhl and Sam Woodley both recorded a pair of hits, with Buhrkuhl leading the way with two RBI.
Corban (27-10, 16-5 CCC) returns to the field this week for its final regular-season home series of the year when it hosts Eastern Oregon University (20-13, 14-6 CCC) for a critical CCC series. First pitch on Friday is slated for 2 p.m.
