KEIZER, Ore. – The Corban University baseball team came up short twice on Saturday against No. 7-ranked Lewis-Clark State College, falling 9-3 and 6-3 to the three-time defending national champions.
"It was not the day we were hoping for today," said Corban head coach Derek Legg, "but we will come back ready to go tomorrow. Tomorrow will be a fun day to honor seniors that have given so much to this program. We look forward to seeing everyone at the field for our last home game this year."
Game one saw LCSC strike first in the third with a run, but Corban responded with three runs in the bottom half of the same inning, highlighted by RBI singles from Jared Bell and Drew Loera.
Those would be the last runs the Navy and Gold would score, unfortunately, as Lewis-Clark State stormed back to scored eight unanswered runs en route to the six-run triumph.
In the defeat, Corban totaled just three hits off of LCSC pitcher Tyler Burch who went the distance, allowing just one earned run and striking out 10.
In the second game of the day, Lewis-Clark State rode the long ball to jump out to a 5-0 lead with home runs by Mason Verge and Matt Thompson.
Corban pulled a couple back on RBI singles from Andrew Axmaker and Tanner Marsh, but Corban ultimately could not complete the comeback in the three-run defeat. In the ballgame, the Navy and Gold tallied seven hits while LCSC totaled eight.
LCSC (36-10, 25-6 NAIA West) and Corban (27-23, 16-15 NAIA West) are back in action on Sunday for Senior Day at 11 a.m. The Senior Day ceremonies will take place approximately 30 minutes prior to the first pitch.
