HILLSBORO, Ore. – The No. 7-ranked Corban University softball team completed the series sweep of the University of Providence on Friday afternoon, winning 8-0 in six innings in game one before then taking the series finale against the Argos, 5-2.
"I thought today was a good day for Warrior softball," said Corban head coach Abigail Farler. "We took some aggressive risks that paid off and were able to string solid hits together. Defensively, we made some really nice stops throughout the day. Sabrina and Rachel and Kaylee threw well for us and gave us the opportunity to win both ballgames. I am proud of how the team worked to get better after our games last weekend and came out hungry this week."
Game one on Friday saw Sabrina Boyd dominate for her 15th complete game, once again not allowing any runs while giving up just three hits. Offensively, the Warriors tallied only six hits, but Corban made them count, scoring the eight runs in six innings to win via the mercy rule.
Mahina Chong led the way with a 2-for-3 effort at the dish with three RBI, while Maddy Melton recorded a base knock and two runs scored. Both Melton and Sam Woodley also notched a pair of steals, remaining aggressive on the base paths.
The theme for game two on Friday was hitting the double for the Warriors, as Kaylee Buhrkuhl, Megan Rybar, Alyssa Doty, Chong and Woodley all recorded a double in the three-run win.
Chong once again went 2-for-3 in the triumph, this time recording a pair of RBI and a run scored, while Buhrkuhl went 2-for-3 with a team-best two runs scored.
In the circle, Rachel White earned the win, tossing five innings while dispersing eight hits and allowing just one run, doing a very good job to get out of a variety of jams. Kayle Graney-Patterson came on in relief in the late innings, throwing 1.2 frames while not allowing a hit to earn the save.
For Providence in the defeat, Gabrielle Canibeyaz tallied a pair of hits, while Karsten Williams also notched two hits for the visitors.
Corban (23-8, 13-3 CCC) returns to action next weekend on the road in Idaho, taking on College of Idaho on Friday and Saturday. The Warriors will then face the University of British Columbia for a doubleheader on Sunday in La Grande, completing the rescheduled games from the snow outs earlier in the year.
